Best Home Based Business Ideas for Part Time

by J.Crawford on February 23, 2009

So you’ve got a few hours to spare and you want to make extra money…I thought I’d share what I think are some of the best part time home based business ideas to make money in your spare time.  Starting a home based business doesn’t need to be an overwhelming undertaking, and shouldn’t be.  There are online based business ideas that fit just about any experience level and any budget.

The days of needing an MBA and decade or more experience in the field to start a small business are over and I think that’s a good thing. With a failure rate of 95% among small business start ups, I think it pays to do a little research and approach entrepreneurship from a different perspective, like maybe starting a business part time from home.

It seems to goal of being in business in the first place can get lost and I hear evidence of this everyday.  The goal of entrepreneurship is not “staying in business”, its making money, if your not making money, get job.  Or better yet start a different business.  I’m of the opinion that starting a number of businesses is probably a better approach. One of them will gain momentum, work with the part time business that pays and the one you enjoy.

Starting a part time home based business or a few of them is much less risks than taking your life savings and investing in an idea the you “think” might be profitable.  What if its not? Keep that in mind….

I like Internet business ideas, that’s just me.  People are starting profitable businesses from their home in just about every field and many are even creating new industries all together.

I think the most important thing to remember is yourself.  Be honest about what your looking to accomplish and choose the best business opportunities for your specific situation.  Many people aren’t aware of the number of low cost business ideas available on the Internet alone.  Ideas from starting a blog to make money to finding a work at home sales job.  There are many turnkey business opportunities and then there are traditional businesses that you can operate from home.

All of these home based business ideas can be profitable and are when your willing to do the work.  Don’t be fooled by the low start up costs, many people make 250k an up with simple home based business ideas, many of which were started with little out of pocket capital in the beginning.

I won’t pretend to be able to tell you which is the best business to start from home in 2009 or 2010, its different for everyone.  Here are the points you might want to cover before you go looking.

  • Available capital to start.
  • Time available to start and then operate.
  • Equipment needed.
  • Are employees necessary.
  • How will you get the money for initial start up.
  • How much are the monthly expenses (fixed)
  • What if any is your marketing budget.
  • Does your family support your business decision.
  • What is your time frame for starting.
  • What is your income goal for the first 90 days, and the first year?

These are all questions that pay to get answered before your go looking for the best home based business to start.

You also want to think about the skills you currently have and whether or not your willing to learn new skills.  Also keep in mind the things you’ve enjoyed over the years and look for business ideas that will allow you to incorporate those interests.

Here are a few ideas I’ve used and work at part time to earn a steady growing income from home.

  • Start a blog.
  • Do some affiliate marketing.
  • Do odd jobs.
  • Web consulting.
  • Small business consulting.
  • Specific software training. (Microsoft excel, etc.)
  • Online advertising.

There are literally millions of great ideas to make money onlineor make money from home, the possibilities are truly endless.  Pick a business idea that works into your life, your schedule and your income goals.

Hello Allen,

I’m not sure if we connected on the b/r exchange but I’ll check straight away. Thanks for the quote, I think it is spot on and thanks for sharing that with our readers.

Thanks again,

Joe.

Great Blog here :)

“The average person puts only 25% of his energy and ability into his work. The world takes off its hat to those who put in more than 50% of their capacity, and stands on its head for those few and far between souls who devote 100%.”
Andrew Carnegie

I am looking to add people to my blog roll/link list comment on my blog if your interested. http://www.successdemandsaction.com

Great post and great suggestions. It would be great if you can post about ways to identify proper home based businesses. As the number of scams have increased in each and every home based business options. Looking forward to more posts.:)
