The business opportunity business model is probably responsible for 90% of the get rich quick advertisements you see on the Internet today and I wanted to share my experience about the business opportunity industry.  It seems over the last 3 to 5 years the “Biz-in-a-Box” model has become a synonym of the business opportunity.  There are thousand of good ways to start a business fomr home and there is a ton of area for growth in the home business world, which also translates into this statement:  There are plenty of great opportunities in at home business and the business opportunity model is probably the least effective.

What is a Business Opportunity?

When I use the term business opportunity I’m referring to a non-franchise business model that typically falls in to the direct sales industry.  Here is a good article about franchises and business opportunities from the Federal Government and the FTC. If you have been looking at the business opportunity industry for long you’ve noticed that many income or business opportunties are marketed as franchise type businesses, which is really misleading in many ways.  The FTC doesn’t want them marketed that way for a reason.  Another point to mention is that many network marketing opportunities and MLM’s are marketed the same way. It seems franchise business ideas have a more credible appeal so marketers like to use the term.

Many of the business opportunites you see online have a built in need to recruit, if you actually want to define what it is you would be doing, the answer would be recruiting. If you are good at recruiting and team building this model may be perfect for you, but you should know going in that the path to success and a good income is recruiting.  Another important factor when choosing the business opportunity you want to invest your time in is to make sure the business model is legitimate.  Here is a great articl on the bottom line of network market businesses and pyramid schemes. How to Avoid The Business Opportunity Scams.

It goes without saying that not all the business opportunities you will find in your search are legitimate.  And even the ones that are technically legit and legal may be grossly misrepresented. If something is marketed as easy and great way to make 10k per month in less than 60 days it is probably misrepresented.  Here is another FTC document that outlines a solid way to research business opportunities so you don’t waste your hard earned money. Avoid scams at all costs.  Here are a few more tips to avoid losing your shirt and becoming involved with a business opportunity scam:

• Ask questions.
• Research the company.
• Research the person who is recruiting you.
• Do a Gut check.
• Researsh the FTC documents that identify what to look for.

Following these recommendations should help you find the best business opportunity options and will safegaurd you in your search.  My first experience online, with the Internet really, was with the business opportunity that was, at best, shady.  I don’t regret the decision to join and start a business with the opportunity because that decision eventually led to the online business that I have today.  I didn’t feel good about the business within a month or two and I knew I had made a mistake so I quit relatively quickly.  That isn’t to say people didn’t make a lot fo money with the business opportunity, because they did, it just wasn’t right for me.

Over the last several years I’ve build a nice recurring income that is very passive, I worked hard to do it, but if I want to take months off (literally) then I can do it without my income being affected at all.  Most Biz-in-a-Box opportunity won’t allow you to do that, well you could take months off, but your income would stop because most are really a sales and recuiting job when you get right down to it.

The Best Business Opportunities

I figured out that in order to have an abundance of Time and Money (at the same time) I need to quit trading my time for money.  You see in order for me to get paid in the commercial contruction industry, I had to build something. No build=No Money and building stuff takes a lot of time and forced me to assume a lot of risk (all of it) and on top of that I had to sacrifice control over my cash flow.  Some jobs would pay a full 6 months to a year after their completion.  I remember buying a dozen eggs from a very large retailer (….mart) That I’d built and I wasn’t even Paid Yet!! What’s wrong with that?

My point is this: If you want to create a passive income element in your life, you have to do it intentionally and in order to do that you need to pick business opportunity with that in the cards. (like this one)
