The most important (and difficult for some) thing about these business models is generating leads. If you have no prospects to talk to you don’t have any money to count either. Right? I’ve had less than 20 years of experience as an entrepreneur so I don’t attempt to be an expert.  But I have had experience with successful offline, more traditional, business model AND online business ideas.  There is a big difference between an online business and a brick and mortar business, depending on the online business you choose to start.  The thing that interest me most about a business model is scalability.  I like to ask myself:  Am I going to love this business if it is actually successful?

I’ve learned the hard way that not all businesses scale well and when they don’t it really sucks.  So I would say the best online business is one that scales, for sure.  Another important element to me when choosing the best online business is how much work will be require to maintain the business.  This question can be answered many times by analysing the systems in place that turn the busines idea into a real online business.  For example, if you start an online business by writing web content for people, it will be difficult to get paid if you decide to stop writing, it isn’t much of a business model.  It is a decent self-employment model and some people do well with it.

The Internet is wonderful, in that it creates so many possibilities to implement ideas and that creates a ton of opportunity.  Lets go back to the example of the article writing online business.  Let’s say that same person who enjoys writing article decided to write some article and create a website with those articles.  Then our aspiring author contacted some folks who might sell products or services that relate to those articles and invited them to consider advertising on his new site.  This is one way to create an online business out of skill you might already possess and the Internet makes this possible. I’ve done it several times.

I would say the best online business ideas are ones that let you do just that, turn a skill you already have or can acquire into a business system that allows you to get paid over and over.  While this might sound easy, it really isn’t.  First off it is difficult to do something, especially in the beginning, that you don’t know will work.  There is a big difference in writing 10 articles for $100 and writing ten articles and then posting them to a website. You have to learn how to set a website up, you have learn what a good “niche” to write about would be from a commercial standpoint, then you have to learn how to get traffic to your website.  All this has to be done before you’ll earn a penny, and that is difficult for people who may not have attempted it before. The good thing is it is easy to learn these things very quickly today, I found a membership site the other day that teaches this stuff in a brilliant way.  I’ve essentially came to the point on my own where I do most of what they teach, but it took me over 3 years to do it.

Actually if you looking for the best online business, the one I just described has many different names and nuances, but I’m telling you from personal experience it is one of the best online businesses to start for a lot of reasons.  If you want an online business that you can create a significant, recurring income with that will pay you bills and then some, it is a great business model.  Back in 2004 I started looking for the best way to start an online business and creating blogs or websites that earn money is a major component of that business today.

Create a realistic, but meaningful, goal and stick to it untill you’ve realized your goal.  One of my early goals was to create an online business that earns $3,000 per month in a very passive way.  I didn’t care how hard I had to work in order to create that business, I just wanted to know that once I did the work the business would continue to pay me over and over, month after month.  I figured if I could meet that income goal with my online business I would have the “breathing room” I need to make good decisions and take advantage of more opportunities as they arose.  That was my goal, it meant something to me and it was a compelling goal to.  That goal inspired me to work, a lot, and I knew it would be worth it. The best online business, or any business for that matter, for a beginner to start is one that can create a compelling result worth working hard for.  I’ve been the “business opportunity” bit too,  while I don’t recommend it and didn’t have directly favorable experience, it did help me clarify what I wanted out of the business I started.  It helped me to define my “best online business”, so to speak.   I wanted what these business opportunity recruiter were selling, which was basically just time and money.  At that point I had had both, but never at the same time.  It seemed like I worked 90 hours a week and it didn’t matter if I have $150,000 in the bank.  And when I had a lot of time, usually in the winter, I was broke.

Choosing the Best Online Business

Another good point to make about choosing the best online business to start is to say:  Make sure you start a business that you are truly passionate about and interested in.  The chasing money game never turns out well.  When you are deciding what type of business you are going to start online, make sure you have  a deep seated reason for starting it.  For many people, myself included, the result that the business will create is the where the passion comes in.  When I started building websites that make money every month I could have started some in the home security niche, there was a ton of money to be made in that niche.  But I had no real interest in the topic so I picked something else I was interested in and I’ve actually earned more money because of it.

I think starting any business can be a little intimidating. Whether its a home based business idea or something as simple as starting a website or blog to make money from home, doing the thing your not familiar with can be difficult. One of the things that bothered me the most when I was a beginner online was knowing what type of business actually makes money online. I mean it’s ridiculous how many different ways you can make money on the Internet, there has to be a million Internet business idea you could choose from.

At first I only had my experience in the traditional business world and that was mostly in just one industry. When I tried to evaluate different business concepts online I was often confused. In the traditional business world it’s pretty clear cut. If your in the service industry, you do the service and get paid. If your in retail, you sell a product and you get paid for it. Online it was difficult for me to determine exactly how and why an Internet business actually made money. I remember what is referred to the “Dot Com Bubble” and I heard that most business on the Internet in the nineties didn’t make money at all. Most of these were large businesses and used public funding and they are in a completely different class that what I’ve ever recommended here as far as the best Internet businesses to start.

Are Internet business ideas different from a traditional business?

I’ll list three Internet businesses that will make money in 2011.  While none of them are brand new in 2011, they are all business models that work with the Internet.  Online business ideas do the same thing as there off line counter parts, it’s just the logistics are different. In the off line business world location is important, not for the sake of location, but for the sake of traffic (and the right kind).  For instance, if you were to open a retail market with meats, beverages, produce and other seasonal items, you would want your business on a busy road in close proximity to a residential area or an existing successful retailer doing a similar (but not the same) business. Online we don’t have roads or building but we do have websites and traffic.  Online the traffic is key, both from a viability standpoint and a profitability standpoint.

All of these 2011 business ideas require the same elements for success which are interest, traffic, and conversion. In order to make any money with an Internet business there has to be an interested customer base who can (and do) get to your website or offer and they need to buy or click or download…. There really isn’t a “most successful online business”, I mean, you could start a web design business, but if your new online this wouldn’t be a smart choice as it’s a skill based business and the learning curve would be tremendous. Starting an affiliate marketing business can be as simple as writing and article… no kidding. There are people who use this method exclusively and do well, I know a couple of them.  I’m not suggesting that is the best way to start an affiliate marketing business, but some people do it that way.

Affiliate marketing can be easily explained as promoting someone elses products. Basically you ( an affiliate ) promote a product of someone who created a product and an affiliate program and you get paid a percentage when someone purchases the product.  Affiliate marketing success is achieved through a balance of automating the process of promoting and getting targeted traffic (people interested in the product your promoting)

Work at home jobs are a viable business idea in 2011and many people who are just too freaked out about starting a business would rather take it one step at a time and do something that is more reminiscent of a job.  One of the top ways to make money on the Internet doing something I would consider a job is to get paid to write. I use a program that shows me without any doubt what keywords are popular, how competitive they are, how much they are worth in advertising dollars and more. It is one of the only software programs I’ve ever purchased online, and it was well worth it. I use it almost every day. Another point that bears mentioning is that there is a difference between an online business idea and a home based business.  Just because you have a home office and do the bookkeeping there doesn’t make your business home based in my book, but to clarify, what I consider to be a home based business is one that does not require you to go out side the home to perform a service in order to get paid.  Really what I write most about and what I mean when I say “home based business” is really and online business or Internet business.

Online Business Perks…

One of my favorite elements to an online businessis that I can literally work from anywhere and I do. I can use my blackberry when I have to wait in line for something, I can work from out of town as well as I can right from my home office and I like that.  Another upside to an online business is that they do allow you to make money while you do other things. I’m not tied to my Online business like a I would be a traditionally business or a job and think that is REALLY cool!

I noticed something the other day about the online business ideas I’ve had and the best ideas I’ve taken action on seem to last.  When I was just beginning I had the thought, or fear really, of wasted effort, money and time.  I assumed that if I were to create a successful businessthat earned consistent cash, it would only last for a certain period of time and I wondered if the time spent to create it would be worth it.  Ever been there?

What I’ve learned in the past few years is that the success I’ve had in my online business endeavors seems to last.  So why do most successful online business ideaslast?  What I’ve come to learn is that over the past few years is that things have changed and the way I make money and the amount of money I make doing certain activities change, but success has remained. One of the reasons the Internet is a great place to turn to start a home based business is that the work you do to create a successful website, for example, doesn’t go to waste if need to make a change.

When you start a website or online business it will need to be in a niche or a small focused topic area.  Here’s the thing though…. Regardless of the niche you pick there are always going to be surrounding and related niches you can morph into if the need arises.  My websites continually evolve and expand and this is why the most successful home business ideas online seem to last.

Obviously getting started and picking the best home based business idea for yourself is the most difficult time.  And yes you’ll do a lot of work before you see any return most likely, but remember that work you do will continue to add to your successes in future if done correctly online.

The home business idea of simply building a well researched and profitable website really seems like a long shot to most folks who don’t have any idea what it really takes.   But…When you learn what it takes to actually create a profitable online business from home without a product or service, it makes more sense, here is what I mean…. First off is something were easy, everyone would do it and it would cease to have commercial value.  Making money with a website takes a lot of work and making a significant income with a website alone is reserved for those who are absolutely determined they want the end result that only a profitable website can bring…

Starting  a home based business or any business really that is difficult to achieve success in isn’t a bad idea considering anyone setting out to do the same later is going to have to do the same things you did, and most just aren’t willing.

Most successful small business ideasaren’t really that “genius” they are just the ones that captured you attention and commanded your effort from a place of inspiration.  When you here the quote..” do what you love” it really just means work from a place of inspiration.

I’ve put together an online business article here that reveals the top online business start up ideas from a popularity stand point. I’m not asserting these are the best online businesses to start, I’m merely saying these are the most common paths to home based entrepreneurship that use the Internet.  Not all home based business entrepreneurs operate an online business. These top ways to make money from home are all of the Internet business variety, and they don’t have to include getting payday loans on the web.

Based on my own experience and research these are the top reasons people prefer the online business models compare to other business models.

• The expenses and overhead of most online businesses is extremely low.

I’ve realized these points to be advantages over most any traditional business and these are some of the reasons I really love the online business model. The other thing is people.  If I don’t want to deal with people, I don’t have to. The way I’ve structured my business allows me to turn it off and on, but I still make money. If I have other plans for a few months, like sailing, I just don’t schedule any consulting clients or deal with direct ad buys or any of that. My more passive income streams will still flow and I really like this about an Internet based business.

Because it looks easy….Seriously.  It makes sense too, that the most popular way to make money from home (or at least try) is blogging.  I mean I couldn’t tell you how many dead blogs I’ve come across online.  People think they can start a blog and make a ton of money, after 30 to 60 days of not making a penny they quit.  But blogging is still probably the #1 most popular online business start up idea.

Affiliate Marketing~ Closely related, maybe even a brother to blogging, affiliate marketing is the next choice for beginner online entrepreneurs. It makes sense too.  Beginners don’t have their own products so it seems logical to try their hand at selling someone else’s.  And affiliate market is a great way to make some serious cash.  In fact I’d say it’s on of the top ways to make money that has created the most “millionaire” or “multi-six figure earners.  I’ve personally witnessed product launches (not my own) that have made several hundred grand in the first two months! Lot’s of money.

Web Publisher~ This is the third most popular online business start up and its a lot like blogging.  Id say a web publisher is a successful blogger.  They write on real topics that have a real interest and they create quality content that helps people understand the web or anything really.  There are health related websites, fitness related websites, you name it.  So how to publishers make money online?  By selling ad space.  It’s amazing how big some of these sites are and ad revenues can really add up (no pun intended).

I know there are a myriad of different business ideas online right now and new business ideas coming up every day, but I’d say these are the top online business start up ideas and also by far the most popular ways people try to make money from home.

The Truth Home Based Online Businesses.

The truth is, based on my own experience and research, that most successful online business entrepreneurs worked real hard to get the results they have.  Most, not all, were entrepreneurs to begin with or at least entrepreneurial minded.  Personally I’ll tell you that I’ve worked just as hard with my online business as I ever have a traditional business.  I like the results I get with my Internet endeavors much more.
