In this post I talk about how most successful small businesses that are home based and operate online make money and how they create truly passive income streams over time.  There are many ways you can make money with your home business but chances are you only focus on one, and most successful home business owners don’t.  Part of making the most money with your small business is to create other revenue streams that piggy back current ones.  One of the foundational principles of marketing is that your current customers are your best marketers and the Internet really lets smart entrepreneurs take advantage of this.

Residual income can be a fickle thing and many times what one person calls residual income is what another guy calls a job.  True residual income is passive in sense that you don’t have to preform an action to get paid.  I’m not at the stage where I look to create passive income exclusively but that doesn’t mean I can’t engage in monetization methods that result in passive income over time.  Network marketing is one of the best business ideas to help illustrate this idea.  If you join a network marketing company and go look in your mail box you’ll find it’s no different than before you joined, it will be the same next month too because passive income doesn’t just show up.  The best way to create passive income in your home business is the same way it’s done in network marketing, you build pipelines through which goods and services flow in one form or another and work on a system and in a systems that automates this over time.

Systems are usually quite simple and they are a crucial part of a good home based business idea, without systems you just have a labor intensive job that you own, also referred to as self employment.  Systems in network marketing take the form of training other entrepreneurs how to build a successful business up front and in a way that the process is not dependent on yourself.  Take for instance a cappuccino machine at gas station.  The machine is a system that operates mostly on its own. If your the gas station owner you’ll have an employee who knows (because of his or her training) when and what to put in the machine to make the system work. It’s really now different from a system perspective the just implement differently.

Networking

Most successful home based businessentrepreneurs online use some form of affiliate or network marketing that is tightly associated with the audience their website commands.  Pretty simple right.  Go to a tech site and you’ll see ads for tech products that lead to purchase gateways at pre-arranged affiliate sites.  Some affiliate relationships are simply a traffic trade and you get paid for the traffic you drive.  The money is in the network any way you look at it. Look at Google, they have the biggest network and index the most content on the Internet today.  As a result they have earnings that reflect that…

Everyone has ideas and rarely will even the best small business idea make you a dime. It’s all about implementation right from the start.  If your going to create a passive income stream with your small business and you look to the Internet to help you stay home based then you need to be planning to do that from the start.  Knowing exactly how your going to make money from the start is by far the most important thing.

Passive Income Doesn’t Just Happen

Many of the best passive money making small home business on the Internet today use a mailing list to make passive income. It really comes down to this.  You only have to write one email, or blog post, create one sales page, and payment gateway in order to earn money from thousands of people on the list. Back to the “work” part of it and the pipeline…..

If you want a mailing list of thousands of eager to buy people you’ll work for it. And not only will you work for it, you’ll be learning everything you need to know about generating traffic, increasing conversions, getting opt ins,email marketing, copy writing, and trust me, there is a lot more… So when you here of this person or that person making $300k in six months realize they spent years and thousand and thousands of dollars to learn and acquire all that is necessary in order to produce those results.  The results are impressive, I just see people looking around wondering how the hell that happens.  So how does it happen? They earn it.

Top affiliate marketers often scoff at business opportunities that offer a turnkey solution to starting a home based business, but many of them got their start the same way.  As far a running your home business like a real business and earning money with the least amount of man hours, a turnkey business model taken seriously isn’t a bad way to go.

A lot of good business model get judged unfairly because of people who treat them more like a hobby than a business. It’s easy to do. When you go out and spend 100k on a franchise agreement you tend to take your investment a little more seriously than you might if you started a business that could earn just as much or more but cost under $500 bucks to start. 

I love web based home business models for Lot’s of reasons, but the top reason I like them is because of leverage.  Really leverage comes from the Internet and the technologies it makes possible, regardless, it allow me to do things and create results that no traditional business model can do, a lot like network marketing.

I often get asked how I make money online when I tell people about my home based business, it is the next logical question I suppose. I mean friend asks what I’ve been up to and I answer, ” I’m doing some stuff to make money online”….

Oh?… Like what?…. Is usually how the conversation goes. It’s funny, I can say I make websites, which is true in a sense. Or I could say I’m a web publisher, which is also true in a sense, but seems a bit professional for my taste.  Do you see what I mean?  And the thing is when I tell them how I make money I get kind of a confused look accompanied by a slow head nod. So like I said in a previous post I’m going to start telling people I sell coffee, give them a card and provide the state of Michigan gourmet coffee.

Most successful small business ideas or start ups are common in a few general ways and starting a home based business or making money online is really no different. If your going to have a money making home based business you have to get a few things right to be a successful entrepreneur:

• Add Value to the Marketplace.
• Offer an in Demand Product People Will Pay For.
• Create a Loyal Following.

That’s about as simple as it gets, of course getting these three things right and building a successful small business is far from easy.  Simple and easy  are two different things. The nice thing about starting a new business online today is the wealth of information available and the number of successful and profitable small business start ups you can pull knowledge from. One of the things I offer on a limited basis is online start up consulting, go to the contact page if you have questions, I answer them from there.  Wading through this wealth of information online is almost as bad as not having access to it. Its kind of like a man dying of thirst being dropped from and airplane into a salty ocean… Know what I mean?

Making money online is just like making money off line with a few twists in the “how” of it.  The basics are the same.  I’ve shared and continue to share why I love the home based business model and use it today in every business venture I get involved with.  I have and will consider a more traditional business model if it makes sense.

My success story is not shocking or all that exciting.  My success online has been rather quiet, and I’m fine with that.  I had a good and loud business before I started my new business online and frankly, I had my fill.

Make Money By Selling Ad Space

One of the best home based business ideas is to build a loyal following to a website and then sell ad space.  Obviously your loyal following is the value you offer and get paid for.  If you intend to make money online selling ad space on you website or blog the pick you loyal following or “targeted audience” accordingly.  Check into the commercial value of the audience you intend to create.

Making Money With Adsense

Adsense is another form of selling ad space and very passive way to go about the whole thing. You can learn more about it by visiting googles adsense blog.  I have a few sites that do well with this method of monetization one example is my making money ideas website.

Making Money With Consulting

One of the new business ideas I’ve been able to earn money online with consulting.  I know more than most people about some things, just like you.  The things I know about have some commercial value, that is they can help people make more money either directly or indirectly.  Many small business owners are trying to use the Internet to improve their business, get more clients, or start a new business and learning how this is done is expensive.  By hiring someone to show you the ropes, you save a ton of cash and a ton of time so I offer consulting on SEO, starting a business online, and other stuff. I’m an entrepreneur and enjoy talking with other entrepreneurs about their business, we are a unique breed and have really cool conversations. It’s fun and I can earn some money doing it.

Money Making Home Based Business Ideas

What originally got me started into making money online, home based business and learning about how to start a small business on the Internet was marketing an easy to start turnkey home based business.  I learned a TON from this experience, didn’t make a lot of money, but learned a ton about Internet marketing, online commerce, websites, pay per click, lead generation and many other things.  I’m currently putting together a group of entrepreneurs who want to create another income stream online. Writing to Make Money

I’ve made some money of writing post for people, not a ton, but it is consistent.  I do a few every month.  I post some of them here on this blog and some on others in my small network. Make Money With Twitter

I’ve also made some money with twitter. I suspect twitter will become a decent revenue stream for my work at home online business in the future. I have made very little with twitter, but continue to build a following and learn how to use it to my advantage.

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing has been a challenge for me. It seems space is always an issue on a website and affiliate marketing is always taking a back seat on my websites. I make a few hundred dollars a month with affiliate marketing and will likely continue to increase this over time.  Making money online with affiliate marketing is one of the most populars ways to create income with a website and many home based businesses use the affiliate marketing business model to earn a large portion of their income. Affiliate marketing is basically promoting or referring a visitor to someone Else’s product or service and getting paid a commission. It is pretty straight forward.

So whats my top business to start in 2010 for a couple hundred bucks and part time commitment?  This one home business idea was an “aside” of sorts, at first, for my successful small business and is quickly becoming a top earner and is the most passive income stream I have to date.

I know, the “so simple anyone can do it” business ideas across the web are enough to make a person vomit. But the title’s true and this business model is by far the easiest business to start from home.

What is the best business to start in 2010?

A Blog….

Yep.

It is a great home business idea and one of the most accessible business models on the planet when it comes to cost, risk, time commitment, and skill set requirements. I mean you can start one if you know how to type! That probably includes most folks over the age of 16.  In fact my daughter, who is 10, has a couple sites and when she is in junior high, she’ll likely make over a grand a month!

Most successful small business are really quite simple just like this one.  Whats nice about starting a business from home is that your “free” time becomes an asset and if you don’t have free time you can create some, regardless of how busy you are.

Easiest Business to Start

Good topics to start this business are endless, from topics about work to products you might use around the house to hobbies like camping or dancing or hiking or skydiving.  All of these make great topics to create an easy home business revenue stream and the best thing is you can learn everything you need to know for free. It is one of the easiest businesses to start from home bar none.

This is a business that can be started for under $200 dollars like I said, actually, it can be started for free on a free blogging platform. I recommend using a self hosted word press platform, just because that is what I’m used too. It really doesn’t matter a bit.

It's Not So Complicated Now Is It?

I love encouraging the entrepreneurial spirit, especially in aspiring business owners.  I thought I’d share my ideas on why the best small businesses to start are often home based.  Many, maybe most, people who are looking to start  a small business are in an employee situation, they got a job.  This brings us to the first reason that home based business ideas are tops on the small business start up list.

The cool thing about a job is that the hours you spend there are often set and scheduling time to work on your home business is really just a decision in discipline.  Starting  small businesses is no easy undertaking and a significant amount of time will usually be required, especially in the start  up phase.  If your crunched for time and you might think of  a business idea that only requires a few hours a week.  Blogging comes to mind as one idea. If your a writer you could start a web publishing business and publish articles to make money from home on your computer.  Earning several thousand dollars a month with a simple home business is nothing to scoff at,  the business model is so much more efficient that half the revenue can generate the same profits as a traditional brick and mortar business.

Most successful small businesses were made that way by someone, like you, being willing to put forth the required effort to get the business off the ground.  Starting a home based small business is a great way to capitalize on any free time you might have and its also a great way to make your money go farther.  We have two resources, time and money, and this is why the best small businesses to start are ones utilizing a home based business model. 

Think of the travel time to and from your retail or office space you may lease.  Think of all the times you only have 45 minutes or an hour so you decide not to go in.  Think of all the late night ideas that could really make your business more successful.  You’d be missing out on these opportunities if you weren’t home based not to mention the costs associated with renting or buying a building to operate from.

Granted not all small businesses can be run from home but many that aren’t could be, could yours?

I have a nephew living in Colorado who started a small business from home making knitted hats that are real popular with the snowboard crowd out there.  If he were tying to pay a monthly lease to have space to knit these hats there is no way he could do it.

I think a ton of people have grand plans to start the ultimate business ”one day”, problem is, one day never comes.  Ask yourself, ” What could I do today to get this business started”.  Many of use the lack of capital as the number one reason not to start a small business.  Creative financing for small business abounds, and many solid home business ideas can be started with very little start up capital.

When it comes right down to it most successful small businesses could be started from home and started in a way that capitalizes on natural growth instead of wasted dollars, hours and head aches trying to pay the bills.

I’ve created a few different income streams online from my home office, none of which really have any overhead to speak of.  I don’t have any employees and no bills that I wouldn’t have otherwise.  The other nice thing about starting a home based business is that it is often times scalable.  In order to make more money you can hire an employee, or better yet outsource it to a like minded individual who wants to work from home.

Many of the millions of Americans operating full or part time home businesses think the best home based business insurance in 2010 might be none.  Home business insurance is at best an wool blanket of double coverage and at worst a complete waste of money depending on the business entity, your daily business practice and the amount and value of equipment you may insure.

When I checked with my business insurance agent he mentioned the items I was concerned with insuring for my home business:  like my computer, lap top, printer and various software were already covered under my home owners insurance coverage.

So is home business insurance really necessary for you business in 2010?  It’s a great question and I’m always reluctant to give straight away advice on matters so circumstantially dependant.  For instance, if you business is primarily operated from you home office but you have clients or customers who actually come there, to the premiss’s, it might be smart to get a home business insurance policy.

Many people opt for a home business liabilitypolicy, if you already have home owners insurance, you probably already have an acceptable home business liability policy as well.  Its always best to check with a qualified insurance agent when dealing with protecting your home business assets, and a qualified expert, I’m not.

It is likely its not necessary you have a home business insurance policy in place, I don’t.  Of course my business is simple, I don’t have walk-in clients, customers, or the general public entering my home or home office for any reason.  As far as my computer, it doesn’t have a lot of value and I back up the stuff that does have value.

Home Business Insurance 2010

2010 is upon us and my have things changed. I think more about insuringmy time and work space than I do the stuff I own or use.  One method I employ in by operations which could be considered home buisness insurance is to keep my tools and data systems web based. I do this mostly because it insures me that no matter where I go, I can access my information, my email lists, my customers, my websites, my accounts, etc.  I really like this, it lets me work pretty much where ever I’m at at the time. Regardless of the home based business idea having a web based office will pay divedins.

I write mostly about home business ideas on this small business blog and this title came to mind earlier.  Home based business ideas that work for average people multiply daily, you may already know this if you been researching business ideas online.

So whats average anyway?

Well, I’d say average people have a job they dedicate a good amount of time to.  They have a decent place to live and reliable car to drive.  Statistics say the average person in the U.S. earns around 36k and works around 50.3 hours per week.

I guess another name for this post could have been home business ideas for people who have a real job or business ideas for employees or business ideas for people looking to earn 10k to 20k more per year without sacrificing every waking hour.

Here’s the deal, or proposition, if you will.  Why don’t you start a blog that integrates what you do for a living, what you would like to do for a living and what your doing to get there.  Another good point: GOOD POINT: If you were a blogger and did the work to gain credibility and a following on your blog don’t you think it might open some doors the next time you were looking for a job?  Think maybe you would even get offers? Probably…

I’m not saying that blogging in and of itself is a great home based business idea or a profitable one, though it could be, I’m saying its a start.  I love the idea of momentum when it comes to business and creating a successful business idea.  Just doing anything leads to something and sometimes something leads to significance. You agree?

Successful home businesses are not all that complicated and depending on your income goals a blog might be a great way to get started.  If your not into committing to a full fledged business, try committing to a small business blog about your area of expertise.

Another great area I write about from time to time is personal development.  Actually personal development was the key to me starting this blog.  I get thousands of visitors every month to this little small business blog and I just basically write my ideas about small business and success.

I earn money with my blog a couple different ways out or dozens of ways to earn money online.  I do some advertising sales, lead generation, and a couple other little things, oh and some affiliate product sales. 

For instance, right now I’m working on connecting with someone or a company that is interested in generating leads online.   I’ll find someone who is serious about generating leads for a business opportunity, a small business product or something of that sort and offer a marketing opportunity to them. Not sure what that will earn but I think adding contact forms to a few of my sites and generating a hundred or so leads a month is worth a nice little chunk of change. Its a rewarding home based business idea.

Average people are earning money online doing dozens of things from selling stuff on eBay to starting SEO consulting companies.  Web design is a great home business ideas you could start locally and expand later using the Internet.

Successful small business ideas are a vehicle, driven by a success minded person.  I really think success minded people become successful people. Its and intentional thing…. I think…

I think it can happen almost on accident if you have a genuine passion for the business your in, but sometimes its gonna take the will to persist and be consist and through slow or difficult times.  I think  a good business idea is the one that gets you excited and keeps you up at night.

Smart business ideas are all around us I think and they are often connected already to the live we are living.  I think people sometimes overlook the most obvious choices for a good small business start up.  I see a lot of “me too” businesses and entrepreneurs looking to tap into an existing market by competing on price alone.  Commoditization of just about every service and product driven business is possible and this mindset only ensures its early arrive.

Generating your own leads for a home based small business has to be a mid term to long term objective if you plan to build a successful home business.  Home based business leadscan range in cost from $1.00 to $15.oo and up depending on the type of lead your looking for.  The choice to buy home based business opportunity leads is a big one and most successful business opportunity marketers end up buying leads online.

I have bought a few hundred, maybe a thousand, leads over the course of my online business adventures.  For me, advertising business opportunityhighlights to generate leads produced mediocre results at best, but I did it.  My approach at first was to visit some of the top sites that came up in the Search Engines and find the ones that would allow advertising for business opportunities.  Purchasing links and posting banner ads is probably the first step in most home business leads seekers journey.  I can say I’m glad my feet weren’t on that step for long.

Affordable home based business leads can be obtained…. It takes time…. a couple years really.  I mean, to generate a hundred or so home business leads each month your going to have to have some time pass between when you develop a plan and when you actually start generating leads.

A couple things I did to generate affordable leads for a home based business were:

1. Purchase print advertising in 20k to 150k circulation papers. (those around large cities, stay out of the big papers.)
2. Post ads on craigslist and route visitors to you site.
3. Purchase ad space on the top home business websites and blogs.
4. Bandit signs work too if you have more time than money.

One of the best things I ever did to generate leads for my home based business was to start a blog.  Yeah…. a blog.  This website, which is a source of steady income for me today was a lead capture page at one point… Not a real good one, I might add.

In order to get traffic to this home business website I started a couple blogs on free blogging platforms.  Using blogs to generate leads for a home based business is a smart idea, its not a “right now idea”, but it is smart, here’s why…

• You have complete control over your blog.
• As you become better at Internet marketing and lead generation you can make changes easily.

Free blogging platforms are free, kind of a no brain er, but did I mention they are free?  One lead generated on a free blog is one lead you don’t have to buy.

Advertising a Business Opportunity

Business opportunity advertising is what it is, here is what I learned: Over time you will find places to advertise that pull leads, as you continue you will refine your marketing efforts and will generate leads for less money, that’s how it works.  I was generating around 100 leads a month at one point and had long since quit purchasing leads for my business opportunity.  Lets face it, business opportunity leads are freaking expensive!  Doesn’t matter to me if you have a huge ROI, why not be developing a resource that will allow you to increase profitability over the long haul?  Probably a rhetorical question, outsourcing lead generation is how the big dogs make their money.  I worked with many people who had five figure marketing budgets and their home based business leads vendors took care of them.  Doing what you do best is a big part of success and mastering every facet of a successful home based small business takes a while, maybe even to long to be worth it really.

I just think the problem with most home business advertising opportunities is that you kinda get lost in the shuffle, people are overwhelmed with all the business opportunities online.

Oh, a point I forgot to mention, don’t do SEO work on a domain that is an extension, own your domain.  I own this domain, I do a lot and have done a lot of work to increase traffic to this site and that would all be wasted if I didn’t own it.  I have other small business idea blogs that are on free platforms and yes I did work but that helps me here.

These are a few things I’ve found with operating a successful home business using the Internet.  I’ve built traditional small businesses in the past and can say that a home business or Internet business idea is much easier and the mistakes are much less costly.

Earning extra money online consistently takes a commitment, you have to be persistent.  Its about committing to the process of learning and doing everything you need to do in order to be successful.  Sound familiar, right?

The top advantages to and online business or home based business idea are in my experience, flexibility, low start up costs, part time (time) commitment, passive income opportunities, and the opportunity to learn new things.

Being savvy on the Internet and understanding Internet marketing causes me to see opportunity everywhere when it comes to making extra money from home.  If you have, and you do, information that can save someone time, money or both you can make extra money from home.

As with most things, you need to put the necessary parts together to create a successful small business.  Your business idea is one part, getting the idea, product or service in front of others is another part.  When all the different parts of the business comes together, its really great, it is worth the hard work.
