There is a boat load of information online on how to do affiliate marketing for beginners and it isn’t my intention to add to the noise with this post but to share some insight into the successful affiliate marketing mindset you need to develop as a beginner.  I’m also going to show you a resource specifically for those of you WordPress users who are building a profitable affiliate marketing business.  I get a lot of comments and emails from people asking what the best way to start an online business is and I usually respond with one of two answers: Blogging or Affiliate Marketing.

They really go hand in hand and are the foundation of a successful business that operates completely online.  That isn’t to say that you should only consider a business that is run exclusively on the Internet.   I’ve owned and still own businesses that operate off line, online, and I’m currently developing two that do both.  Affiliate marketing can make any business more profitable as another form of marketing, but this article is going to focus on how to do affiliate marketing for beginners online.

The Affiliate Marketing Mindset

In order to build a real business you have to really get the mindset. I heard an analogy that told the story of bringing water to a city.  The story clearly revealed the correct mindset that you need to have in order to build a successful affiliate marketing business as a beginner. Here is the story:

There was a town called opportunity and the town didn’t have water readily available in the city limits so people would get up every morning, grab buckets and go out to where the water was and carry buckets. One day an ambitious young man named Bill got the idea that instead of going to his job everyday he could just carry water for people and they would pay him.  He realized he could make more money carrying water for the towns people.  So he went and bought some buckets and started carrying water. People loved it and soon more people wanted him to carry water that he could handle so he hired a couple employees to help him. Then Bill bought a truck and a trailer to keep up with the demand. Life was good, he was making money and people were loving the fact that they didn’t have to carry water any more.

NOTE:  The story so far, pretty accurately depicts a self employment opportunity for Bill and jobs for his employees.  If this guy quits carrying water, he quits getting paid. I’ve been self employed and still am really, but there is a big difference between being self employed and owning a business. You should do both.  Read the second part of the story below:

One morning as BOB was watching Bill’s bucket carriers bringing water to the city and he got an idea.  Bob started contacting people and buying supplies, and pipe.  Bill went out and had another well dug and he started building a pipeline from the well to the city.  People would laugh at Bob, saying he was crazy, after all he wasn’t making any money at all and the pipeline wasn’t getting done very fast.  Bob kept at it though, he learned the things he needed to learn (coaching)  about building a pipeline and was persistent in his efforts.  About 8 months latter Bob had completed his pipeline.  The towns people had never seen a pipeline and frankly they thought Bob was off his rocker and wondered why he would waste so much time building the pipeline.  Well on morning Bob went out to the town square and turned the valve on his pipeline and water came rushing out. People were amazed.  Bill was out of business because Bobs water was much less expensive.

Bob built a business.  A business is a system or set of systems that work together to create a desired result.  Usually those results have something to do with using resource efficiently, the two most common resources are time and money.

If you want to know how to do affiliate marketing the right way, think of building a pipeline in stead of carrying buckets.  Learn how to build an affiliate marketing system that works.  Sure there are some smart “bucket carrying” tactics too and they should be a part of any beginners business model, but when you start with a plan to build a real business you’re always building toward that even while you’re bucket carrying in the beginning.  The time to have a map is before you go into the woods.

One of the crucial keys to learning how to do affiliate marketing as a beginner is getting the correct information.  There are literally hundreds of TACTICS you can implement in affiliate marketing.  But tactics alone won’t help you build a successful online business with affiliate marketing.  What beginners lack is a solid plan, with clear steps from the beginning to the end.  Sorting through the noise has become almost impossible and it has created a ridiculous learning curve for beginners tying to master affiliate marketing.

I just got an email about a profitable platform that affiliate marketers are using to make more money with their wordpress sites. If you are using wordpress to build you online business, I recommend checking it out.  If you’ve been at affiliate marketing for a while of have had a web presence for a couple years, you’ve noticed some big changes over the last year.  This platform has the most current and relevant strategies to build you online business.  It addresses the challenges social media has brought to SEO and just about every other change that is affecting your online business.  From panda to personalized search, these guys have some of the most valuable information, plug-ins, and strategies. Again, if you use Word Press and you make money online, you should look into this.

From time to time I install a pop-up form on this site that asks visitors the question: “What it your #1 struggle in building a successful business online”. The answer varies widely but I always notice common themes. One of the most common struggles in achieving online business success is always money, which I find odd. In order to have a viable Internet business online in 2012, you have to make money. If you have some idea that you are completely in love with then see if it will make money. If it doesn’t then move on, you don’t have to drop the idea, but if it doesn’t make any money, it’s just an idea not a business. Essentially there are only a few real ways to make money with online with an Internet business. Yes, there are thousands of tactics, strategies and methods, but they all fit into these 3 categories. Trust me. If you are evaluating an Internet business idea that doesn’t do one of these 3 things, it isn’t a business.

The best Internet business model integrates all 3 of these categories and you can verify that for yourself. Just go look at the most popular online business sites or bloggers or whatever… Every Internet business must do at least ONE of these three things, the Best Internet Business for 2012 does all 3:

1. Make money selling someone else’s products.
2. Make money selling your own products.
3. Help someone who is doing #1, #2, or both.

UPDATE: I’m including a third option to make money with your Online business, which is “get paid to” opportunities. There are several ways to make money by taking surveys, writing, reviewing products and more. While I don’t consider these ways to build a viable Internet business in 2012, you can use them to make money. I’m creating a resource that outlines the top ways to make money on the Internet right now.

Every Internet business falls into one of those categories, the best Internet business does fits into all three. When I first discovered this I was a bit taken back and, to be honest, a bit overwhelmed. First off I didn’t have my own products to sell, let alone have a clue how to develop them. I wasn’t sure how I could sell someone else’s products either, it sounded like a lot of work. I did understand what it meant to help someone else sell their own products or someone else’s. I learned about creating niche websites which is just a website that focuses on one topic. This, in turn, creates a targeted audience and these “Targeted Audiences” are a hot commodity to those selling products in that niche. This site is one example of a niche site. It isn’t as focused as it used to be but it still services the “business ideas” niche. I cover just about any type of business on this site but most focus on small home based business ideas and Internet business models. I also dabble in network marketing and affiliate marketing here on this website.

Making Money Selling Someone Else’s Products

This is probably one of the most popular online business models and it has many different names. The most common name is affiliate marketing. Have you heard of affiliate marketing? Not all business model’s that pay you a commission when you sell a product are referred to as affiliate marketing opportunities. It would be a lot simpler if they were. When you sell someone else’s product and they pay you a commission you are said to be an affiliate of that product.

Affiliate Marketing Business Model

I’ve done my fair share of affiliate marketing and I continue to use affiliate marketing as a top income stream here on this site as well as on other sites I own. I go into greater detail on making money with affiliate marketing on a page I’ve created with the same name. There is a link to that page below. Here are some other traditional affiliate marketing models:

• Pay per action: You get paid when you encourage someone to do something.
• Pay per lead: You get paid when you encourage or promote an offer that results in a “lead”.
• Pay per call: You get paid when someone makes a phone call.
• Pay per view: You get paid for each view you promote, like a video or banner ad.

These are some of the most common ways you can get paid selling someone else product through the affiliate marketing business model. Once you have a targeted audience set up it is a good way to earn money and over time it becomes somewhat passive. Network Marketing Business Model

I’m sure you’ve heard of network marketing or MLM or Multi-level marketing. This is another way to earn money with an online business without having your own product. There are thousands of multi-level or network marketing companies, some have been around for decades. Some network marketing companies are successful online, but not many. Network marketing has always been a people business and most MLM’s are still an off-line business model. I’ve only seen a couple that are successful online. Network marketing or MLM’s allow you to get paid to promote the parent company’s products and you also get further compensation when you build a team (down line) of people doing the same thing. I have a love/hate relationship with network marketing and only consider it as a viable business if the opportunity is relevant, add real value, and can be done online. The Business Opportunity Business Model

The business opportunity business model is another profitable business idea that lets you make money in your online business by selling someone else product. The business opportunity model falls under some FTC guidelines and I’ve written an extensive article about the business opportunity business model. Essentially when you promote a business opportunity you earn money when someone else buys the right to promote the business opportunity. This may sound odd, and I think it is, but essentially that is the name of the game.

Most business opportunities have real products that you likely will have to buy yourself to earn money when other people buy them. I was involved with a business opportunity in the very beginning of my online business; it is actually what got me started blogging and learning how to make money with an Internet business. Here is my $.02 on business opportunities: Essentially you are paid to recruit. If you like recruiting and are good at it, you can make serious cash. It is the least passive business model I’ve used online. Make sure you have your legal paper work in place. Make sure you are prepared to refund people’s money.

There are some really profitable business opportunities out there. Some of the most profitable business opportunities have commissions of $1,000 and up some up to $5,000…. Big pay days. One of the income streams I use on a couple of my sites is selling ad space to people who promote business opportunities online. When I say they are profitable I’m not only citing my own experience in past but also the long term advertisers I sell ad space to on my small network of sites. Make Money Selling Your Own Product

Essentially, just about every successful and profitable online business entrepreneur got that way by developing his own products and selling them online at some point. I’ve also learned that most of the top income earners online didn’t start out that way. I currently know a have dozen full-time Internet entrepreneurs who don’t have their own product and they enjoy a $250,000 per year income online. I say this because it can be scary creating your own product; I’m currently working on that right now. The bottom line is; not having your own product is absolutely no reason to not start an Internet business in 2012 and work hard to get where you want to be. The best Internet business model isn’t all about you and your own products anyway; it’s about adding value and owning a unique spot in the market place.

There are several ways you can develop a “product “ that can only be found in one spot, your website. It doesn’t need to be a paid product either, one of the most profitable methods online is what is called the funnel. Many people use their own product as the first step in the funnel and monetize traffic with affiliate marketing offers. So what are some of the ways you can use your own product to enhance your Internet business and make more money online 2012?

Well, I’ve seen a lot of different products and I feel the most important product of all is a free report. Even those top income earners I mentioned who don’t even have their own product that they sell, have a free report. The free report is one of the key elements to building a list of targeted prospects who you can later market paying products to. This is an older method of online marketing but it still works. It actually works a lot better if you have a targeted audience that is passionate about your topic. More and more people just don’t have time for emails, BUT if they have a passionate interest in the topic you’ve chosen, you are in luck.

One of the businesses I currently own is a Farm Fresh Produce Market. People are passionate about the food they eat, some people. The customers who stop at the market are very interested in food. They have learned the importance good food has in overall health. I’ve build a couple different websites related to vegetables, gardening, and fresh produce and I suspect that this will turn into a profitable Internet based business over time. I don’t assume this because the niche is SOOO profitable, because it isn’t. But the people in this niche are passionate about the topic. If I can find a good way to add value to this niche I will be paid handsomely for it for sure.

The Top Product Ideas for Internet Businesses

I spend more time online than most people spend at work and I’ve seen a LOT of different products that work to monetize an Internet business. I recently came across a product that I absolutely wanted to buy; in fact it was the exact offering I would like to have for my own online business. I couldn’t afford the product #1, and #2 I’ve basically already been through the product in that I’ve studied the basis of the product for years. I don’t remember but think the price was $3,900.. Maybe I could create a product along these line that was much cheaper??? Hmmm.

I guess the point is that even if you go out in the woods for a month and create a product you can sell in your Internet business, it won’t be original and it doesn’t need to be. Very few of the top product ideas I’ve seen for Internet business entrepreneurs are completely original and when they are they are many times very insignificant. But guess what, it’s still your own product and having your own product goes a long way to producing credibility.

• Some of the best Internet business entrepreneur product offerings I’ve seen fall into these categories:
• Services you can offer like web design, marketing services, SEO, other consulting.
• Software that solves a problem or automates a tedious task.
• An e-book program that teaches people how to do something.
• A resource for doing something in an efficient manner.
• A report intended to reproduce a significant result.
• A membership website that offers unique content and value.
• A book.

These are just a few of the products I’ve come across that play a vital role in the financial well-being of many Internet based business ideas. I could go on and on about product ideas that the best internet business entrepreneurs use to make more money online, but it would be more effective to pose a question: What could you do, teach, or assist someone in that is relevant, unique, and worthwhile? That would be a good way for you to create your own product for your online business.

If you currently have a website or blog you could ask your visitors what would benefit them the most and create a product as a solution to their main problem. ( a test I’m currently doing)

Make Money By Helping Someone Else Make Money

The next way most profitable Internet businesses make money is to help someone sell their own or someone else’s products. The simple way of saying that is make money by selling advertisement in one of many of its varied forms. One of the most popular ways to make money online is blogging, and this is the most popular way to help someone sell their products. Essentially you’re connecting vendors with customers. Once you’ve developed an audience as a blogger you can sell advertising. There are smart ways to do this that offer a solid income and there are some not so smart ways to do this that may pay well for a while, then go bust. Many bloggers turn to AdSense as their key money maker, as I did early on.

The problem with relying on an advertising platform like AdSense is that it can go away at any time. One of the things I learned the hard way was that it isn’t smart to build your Internet business model around one platform. I would have been doing things completely differently if I never would have applied for AdSense and I would have been making a lot more cash faster.

Here are my top 5 home based business ideas for a beginner in 2012. The are the best business ideas online to start and be earning a significant recurring income within 60 to ninety days, from my own experience.  I’ll be including some resources to help you get started in the right direction and earning money as quickly as possible.  I’ll also talk briefly about each of the business ideas and how the can all work together so by the end of 2012 you can actually have a viable business earning a full time income. Regardless of your past experience with building a website or making money with one, starting a blog that makes money is a profitable way to start a home based business in 2012. And, in my opinion, is the first step to building a profitable small business online.  There are hundreds of ways to start a website or blog, many of the best are free or cost very little, expense is not a barrier to creating a profitable business you can operate from home. Affiliate marketing is simply put, making money selling someone else’s products.  Making money with affiliate marketing is a smart business idea for  a beginner and it will tie in nicely with starting a blog that makes money.  There are thousands of online entrepreneurs whose sole income is from affiliate marketing and thousands more who got started through affiliate marketing and went on to build online empires that have earned millions.  Affiliate marketing has to be a component of any successful home based business idea in 2012. Making money now, or making money at will is an important part of any business.  Maybe you have a service you could offer other people.  A service that you get paid for.  I wouldn’t advise starting a purely service oriented business on the Internet (because passive is better) but having something you can do today and get paid for today is a nice option for a beginner.  Many of the best business ideas I’ve found online don’t earn money immediately, they take time to build.  Once they are up and earning they are quite passive and the income will continue to build if your willing to work hard.  Cash flow is important to any business and ways to make money now will help you with initial cash flow. You’ve probably heard of getting paid to take surveys and it’s one example of how to make money now even if you have no experience on the Internet. Home Based Franchise Ideas.

If you have experience as an entrepreneur in the brick and mortar business world but you want to start another business from home, then starting a home based franchise business may be right for you.  Home based franchise ideas have a wide range industries, from consulting to pet grooming.  I don’t have a particular franchise idea to recommend, but I’d encourage you to choose a franchise that you have genuine interest in you feel comfortable with. Network Marketing Opportunities.

Network marketing opportunities or directs sales opportunities are also a very popular home based start up right now and will be one of the most popular home business start ups in 2012.  That said, they aren’t for everyone.  It seems everyone and their brother has tried a network marketing opportunity.  Maybe you have too.  The key to success in a network marketing or direct sales business opportunity is treat it like a real business.  That was always hard for me and I’ve never really found an opportunity that felt motivated about.  I do know several people who do very well with these opportunities and they all incorporate their opportunity into their website that also earns money.  When you start a blog that makes money you will also have a great way to connect with others who are looking for good ways to make money from home and they may find interest in you network marketing opportunity. I’ve written several article on network marketing opportunities and how to avoid scams.  Here is an article on finding the best network marketing opportunities.

These are 5 of the best home based business ideas I’ve found to be sustainable.  There are many more that may work better for you.  The are some of the best business ideas you can start for under $100, except for maybe the franchise opportunity.  That could come later.  Starting a home business in 2012 is a great way to diversify your income and make you less dependent on your job or another business.  I recommend starting a home based business in your spare time, it is a great way to hedge risk and make it more stress free start up.  Starting an online business in 2012 is a great way for  a beginner to get started as an entrepreneur. I believe there there is literally endless opportunity online and wish you the best in your entrepreneurial ideas in 2012.

I’ve been online for several years now and find it amazing that the best business ideas for 2011 are very similar to the ones in 2012.  The niches change but the fact remains more and more people are accepting the Internet as part of their daily realities and this creates a huge opportunity for people like you.

Most successful work at home business for a beginner have some common characteristics and I’ll share what those are in this short article that highlights 3 of the most successful work at home businesses to start. Finding an easy business to start from home can be difficult, mainly because thousands of Internet marketers saw you coming long ago and they are ready for you. Much work and creativity has gone into making different work at home businesses “stand apart” when in reality there are only a few successful at home business models in the first place.

I would also ad that the terms have become inter-changable and most work at home businesses are really Internet businesses. Years ago you could do mass mailings for companies or assemble products at home, but these have largely fallen by the way side, they were more Jobs than businesses anyway.

Regardless of what you read there are only a few ways to make money from home, or from anywhere else for that matter and they are:

1. Create a product or service that people want to buy and sell it to them.
2. Find a product or service someone else created that people want to buy and sell it to them.
3. Sell advertising space to someone who is selling a product or service whether it be their own or someone elses.

3 of the most successful work at home businesses for a beginners use a combination of all three and I’ll talk more about a successful home business model throughout this post.  Keep in mind the “Product” takes on some unique forms when it comes to the age of the Internet and sometimes the product is even a business.  Business opportunities are a HUGE sector of the work at home business industry and there are litterly thousands fo different business opportunities out there.  When the “Product” is someone elses and you promote or sell it’s called affiliate marketing and it is easily one of the top three work at home businesses that are a perfect match for beginners.  In my personal experience and in my reasearch I’ve found that the third of the top three most successful businesses for work at home entrepreneurs is also the glue that holds it all together and it is actually blogging.  I’ll give  a brief run down of the three and share some of the critical points and biggest challenges of all three.

Business Opportunities

Some of the most successful small business ideas online, the ones that earn some of the those rediculous incomes, are actually business opportunities.  If you start a work at home business opportunity you will likely play the role of a direct sales person.  You’ll be paid directly for selling the products or services of the business opportunity and also make money through recruiting others to your business.  Many business opportunities use a network marketing business model, but not all. Some of the benifits of business opportunities are:

1. Low start up costs compared to a traditional business or franchise.
2. Flexible schedule and can be part time.
3. High earning potential in a reletively short amount of time. 

Remember not everyone will make money with a business opportunity. Sales skills or a solid system that helps with the selling and explaining are a plus when it comes to business opportunities.  Business opportunities can cost anywhere from $100 to $20,000 dollars to start and will usually require some sort of a marketing budget.  Depending on the opportunity, recruiting can play a huge roll in your income.  We recommend you do your due dilligence when evaluating a business opportunity, when you find one that is right for you make sure you have a mentor and go to work!

Affiliate Marketing

Promoting someone elses products or services and getting paid a commision is the name of the game when it comes to affiliate marketing.  Often times promoting the product can be as simple as sending a visitor to a website, your not actually selling anything most of the time. I’ve found several good resourses on how to make money with affiiliate marketing and make decent money every month myself with affiliate marketing.  One critical component of affiliate marketing is developing an audience that is targeted to the niche of the affiliate products you want to promote.  Pick a niche that you have a genuine interest in, maybe one you are already familiar with.  There are some great affiliate marketing opportunities out there from some of the biggest companies in the world, including Amazon, eBay, etc.  Some of the benifits of affiliate marketing include:

Make Money Blogging

Number 3 on my list of the most successful work at home businesses for beginners is blogging.  I don’t how you feel about this business idea, but blogging has created thousands of successful home business entrepreneurs and it’s a perfect match for the right person.  I mentioned this was the glue that held together the whole group and I said that because one of the most successful home business models actually uses all three.  If your serious about starting a business you can do from home I recommend starting with a blog.  Starting a blog is way easier to day and if your completely new you can get training for almost zero cost. I wrote a post about making money with a blog on another site you could read. I make great money blogging and hands down it’s my top pick if you want to start a successful work at home business. 

Small business ideas online are much less expensive to start up and this makes the much less risky for the first time business owner.  I’ve spent very little money in the last few years to learn how to make some money online.  I’ve slowly developed a full time income working on the Internet and can say it is very rewarding.  One of my favorite parts about earning money with this type of home based business is that when I walk away to do other things, I don’t loose anything and I keep making money.  How many other new small business ideas can you say that about?

As any entrepreneur working from home knows, marketing is key to success.  Markeitng a home based  is especially crucial as location may not play a role in your marketing plan.  An occasional newspaper ad and spreading the word through friends and acquaintances isn’t going to do the trick. Just like any other business running out of an office, home based businesses must engage in optimized marketing campaigns to increase their customer base.   Below are some tips to you started.

Start by printing business cards.  This is one of the most basic steps you can take and it won’t cost you a fortune.  A good online printing company will offer printed business cards for less than $20. It’s a small investment you should make.  A business card is something you can have with you at all times, the small size makes it easy to carry. You never know when you’ll have the opportunity to hand one out. It could be a huge client that will come back over and over.  Look for a printer offering an online design center, or one that will accept your print ready files via upload.

1. Networking, get out there and chat.  There are a lot of networking groups which meet regularly. They are designed to get small businesses together and refer leads within the group. These groups are helpful because the other small businesses are in the same boat. They all need customers and they have incentive to refer customers to you, because they know the favor will be returned when the opportunity arises.   You should also let everyone you know about your home based business.  Your friends already know and like you, try to enrich these relationships in an effort to gain the powerful advantages of word of mouth advertising.

Websites are essential.  Even the smallest home based business should have an internet presence.  A website should provide information about your business, what service or product is offered, and a method of contact.  A website is a great way to get started marketing a home based business.  Customers need to be able to know how to reach you, so ensure you put a phone number, contact form, or email address on your website.  If you don’t know how to create a website, don’t worry. Coding isn’t necessary. There are a lot of alternatives including templates and themes that are ready to go. All you need to do is reserve a domain name and select a hosting provider.

1. Brochures can come in handy. If you ever go to trade shows, need to mail out information, or meet with clients in person, having a brochure can give your business a lot of credibility. Professionally printed brochures should contain brief information about your business, great graphics and a company logo.  

1. Stay in contact with email marketing. You likely already have a ton of contacts in your email address book.. Use these to your benefit.  Create a monthly e-newsletter and start sending it out. You can start with the friends and contacts you already have. Eventually your distribution list will grow. Every time you meet with a client, or talk with a potential customer on the phone make sure you get their email address. They may not be a customer right away, but keeping in touch on a regular basis will increase your chances of them becoming one.

Seriously, starting a profitable home based business online for less than $100 bucks is a real possibility. Listen when I started online back in 2006 I didn’t spend a dime…. Seriously. I heard in a mlm conference call that starting a blog was a good way to connect with people who might be interested in start a home business via an mlm distributorship so I did. MLM sucks by the way and I don’t recommend it across the board.  But really besides mlm is it possible to start a home based business for less than $100?

Yes… it is. So you probably want to know how to start a home based business online, or at least my idea, right?  Well it comes down to information.  When your talking about a online business idea, your talking about sharing information plain and simple.  Sure there are eccomerce sites where folks can shop and buy products, but if you have 100 bucks and you want to be in business today (yes today) then I have a way better way to start a home based business. How to start a home based business

Starting a business is really nothing more than beginning to build a system that will pay you while your not there.  A job is a an opportunity to trade time for money, you give a unit of time you get a unit of money.  One easy way to start a home based business online is to start a blog. I could say build  website but right away about 60% of people would eliminate it as an option as they have no clue how to build a website.

Starting a blog is free and easy you can start your first free blog at Blogger. While a free blog is a nice start to getting your home based online business off  the ground, it doesn’t stop there.  I’ll list a couple great resouces for starting a blog that makes money in just a minute, but before I do, I ‘d like to share that I personally earn a significant income every month because I’ve followed the exact same advice I’m giving you right now. No, I’m now a millionaire, but I do earn an income that lets me decide if and when I’m going to spend my time doing something else so I can make money. I love the lifestyle that what I’m proposing to has done for me.  It’s probably not for everyone. It is very quiet and and there isn’t anyone giving me credit evvery other day.

Why Home Based Business?

If I want to take 4 or 5 months off, I can, and I like that. Actually I think I wrote a post a couple months ago about step by step ways to make money online, yes I did and that was the link.  Alternatively just go start a free money making blog and get things going. I wrote another post about 3 Internet business ideas that will make money this year and next.

Rememeber home based businesses don’t have even a fraction of the start  up costs that traditional business models do, that’s not to say you can’t get up there in budget but that’s just not how to start a home based business. Start by doing something you have a genuine interest in and go from there. There are litterally millions of ways to make money.  The ideas to make money are endless, just think of a few right now.

Entrepreneurial people aren’t typically hard pressed to come up with good ideas for making money or starting small businesses.  Choosing start up business ideas that will be successful is a whole different ball game than just comming up with new business ideas though. I’ve had some experience myself with successful startup ideas and I’ve been researching and studying the small business niche for quite a few years now so I thought I’d offer some tips in choosing the best start up business ideas.

What’s the Best Small Business to Start?

Choosing the best Start-up idea has a lot more to do with you, the entrepreneur, than the business concept itself.  Over the years I’ve seen hundreds of businesses start.  Some have succeeded, but most failed. I’ve had some businesses do better than others but I’ve been fortunate enough to now lose a ton of cash on a start up, mainly because of the businesses I’ve choosen to start. I’ve learned that you can start a lot of businesses without a lot of start up capital and I think these can be the best options when it comes to picking the best business to start.

Startup Business Ideas

Here are a few ideas to consider when evaluating different start ups.  It’s easy to forget to think about what happens if it all goes wrong. What if you business fails?  I really think that is one of the best quesitons to ask yourself when considering any start up business idea.  Positive thinking is crucial to your success, I get that, but whats the plan if the business doesn’t pan out?  What position will that put you and your family in?  These questions are the ones you want to have solid answers to.  Having a good idea of what you will have to do should your business fail is a big part of having the confidence to really succeed at you start up.

If the answers to these tough questions scare you then find ways to make the answers less scary.  Often times making small changes to your business start up plan can greatly reduce risk and exposure, maybe even keep you from loosing your shirt, know what I mean?

I have yet to start a business or evaluate a business that couldn’t be tested to the extent you could have a pretty good idea of it’s success.  Growing businesses present challenges but those are the challenges you want to be dealing with, not a deeply indebted business that really never gets of the ground.

So think about the downside when evalutatin the best business for you to start. Expect the best, plan for the worse.

Most successful small businesses have some tough times around year 2 or 3 and being in a decent financial position may mean the difference between success and failure during these valley times.

Home based business ideas are a very popular start up business model these days and for good reason.  Many home based businesses require much less start up capital than brick and mortar type business and franchise ideas. Homebased business ideas tend to be popular because they:

• Don’t always require employees.
• Have lower operating expenses.
• Have low start up costs.
• Don’t require leases or purchasing real estate.

Home based businesses are much cheaper if they fail and many times the business idea will simply morph into something that does work.  Guessing the market wrong with a brick and mortar business is expensive, a small home based business can be more easily modified to serve the market in a successful way.

Online Business Ideas

Online business ideas or Internet start ups can be very profitable startup ideas too.  You don’t have to create the next Face Book to make a good income online, you just have to find something that works and do it well.  Some of the benifits to starting and online business idea are:

• Very low initial investment.
• Large geographical market area.
• Inexpensive to Text.
• More scalable than most businesses.
• Outsourcing is available and at a low cost.

What makes this most successful home business model you can start using the Internet?  Well here is the short list:

• It is completely scalable.
  It is monetarily intelligent.
  The start up costs are on the extreme low end of the spectrum.
  The maintenance cost are cheaper that 25% of a cable bill. (in my case)
  It builds over time into a saleable asset.
  It can be managed from anywhere.
  Needs no employees.
  Liability and exposure can be reduced to nothing.

This isn’ theory either, this IS the actual model use today. Here is what it looks like:

That is the business model that I feel far out performs others for the reasons listed about. Now, there ARE other business models that would also offer the same benefits in the list above BUT this particular model offers way more options. It is the most flexible (easily innovated) business model I’ve found to build a successful home business on the Internet. Notice the three monetization methods in the diagram, there are more that can easily be added making this a very popular business idea.

One question or disagreement I might have with the diagram for purposes of illustration is this: If you were to put the “content” under the “traffic” I think the diagram would be more telling from an Internet business perspective.  Why?  Because the traffic is already there and you can create the content that will in effect “pull” the traffic in. See what I mean?

Is this a new business idea?

No, it really isn’t.  Now that you know what it looks like you’ll recognize it all over the web. The hottest new business are rarely the ones that make money (or sense for that matter). And keep in mind you can create a successful small business online without a “popular business idea”… I could show you dozens of profitable homebased business ideas that you would think are just plain weird, but they make money everyday. The more popular the business idea is the more competitive it will be, not that this is necessarily bad, just something to think about.

Most successful small businessesadd value through products or services being actively sought out by urgent buyers. Most successful Internet business ideas offer products or services that make sense on-line.  Think digital products, or information products. What makes this a smart business idea (or model) is that through contextual advertising you can also make money with an online business by connecting customers who are looking for products or services that cant actually be delivered on the Internet. And you can also make money via affiliate marketing through products that can be delivered online.  Ideally a home based business should use all monetization methods that will work and this one does.

Successful Home Businesses Internet Style

Most successful home businesses Internetbusiness people are using employ this business model in one fashion or another and you can too. Like I said I use this model BUT I totally arrived at it on accident and took me about 3 years to figure it out. If I were going to do it from scratch again, I’d use a program that teaches this step by step. I believe it would take my own 3 year process and cut it down Drastically. I think a person who knew they wanted to start a successful Internet business could start a home business in less than 30 days by using a good tutorial type program, AND the best “how to start a Internet business programs ” are cheap. Very cheap. I don’t recommend recommend spending hundreds of dollars on a course that promises you you’ll be rich in  a month. If you want to start a real Internet business using your own business idea then work with others who can and will actually help you AND who have already done it themselves.

Mack Micheals program is probably the most comprehensive membership site (over 12,800 members as of January 2011) for someone looking to start and online business from scratch AND for the person who is making a few hundred dollars a month from contextual advertising a few hundred from Click Bank or some other affiliate marketing. Listen, if your already making 3k per month plus online the program probably isn’t for you.  But you could pick up some great ideas and cancel your membership anytime you like. Here’s the thing though===> WATCH the video FIRST!  Mack literally walks you throughout the entire site. Watch the Video (its free) Just go to the website and scroll down to the SECOND video, he’s pretty transparent about what the program offers and who it’s for.
