As any entrepreneur working from home knows, marketing is key to success.  Markeitng a home based  is especially crucial as location may not play a role in your marketing plan.  An occasional newspaper ad and spreading the word through friends and acquaintances isn’t going to do the trick. Just like any other business running out of an office, home based businesses must engage in optimized marketing campaigns to increase their customer base.   Below are some tips to you started.

Marketing a Home Based Business

1. Start by printing business cards.  This is one of the most basic steps you can take and it won’t cost you a fortune.  A good online printing company will offer printed business cards for less than $20. It’s a small investment you should make.  A business card is something you can have with you at all times, the small size makes it easy to carry. You never know when you’ll have the opportunity to hand one out. It could be a huge client that will come back over and over.  Look for a printer offering an online design center, or one that will accept your print ready files via upload.

1. Networking, get out there and chat.  There are a lot of networking groups which meet regularly. They are designed to get small businesses together and refer leads within the group. These groups are helpful because the other small businesses are in the same boat. They all need customers and they have incentive to refer customers to you, because they know the favor will be returned when the opportunity arises.   You should also let everyone you know about your home based business.  Your friends already know and like you, try to enrich these relationships in an effort to gain the powerful advantages of word of mouth advertising.

1. Websites are essential.  Even the smallest home based business should have an internet presence.  A website should provide information about your business, what service or product is offered, and a method of contact.  A website is a great way to get started marketing a home based business.  Customers need to be able to know how to reach you, so ensure you put a phone number, contact form, or email address on your website.  If you don’t know how to create a website, don’t worry. Coding isn’t necessary. There are a lot of alternatives including templates and themes that are ready to go. All you need to do is reserve a domain name and select a hosting provider.

1. Brochures can come in handy. If you ever go to trade shows, need to mail out information, or meet with clients in person, having a brochure can give your business a lot of credibility. Professionally printed brochures should contain brief information about your business, great graphics and a company logo.  

1. Stay in contact with email marketing. You likely already have a ton of contacts in your email address book.. Use these to your benefit.  Create a monthly e-newsletter and start sending it out. You can start with the friends and contacts you already have. Eventually your distribution list will grow. Every time you meet with a client, or talk with a potential customer on the phone make sure you get their email address. They may not be a customer right away, but keeping in touch on a regular basis will increase your chances of them becoming one.

Seriously, starting a profitable home based business online for less than $100 bucks is a real possibility. Listen when I started online back in 2006 I didn’t spend a dime…. Seriously. I heard in a mlm conference call that starting a blog was a good way to connect with people who might be interested in start a home business via an mlm distributorship so I did. MLM sucks by the way and I don’t recommend it across the board.  But really besides mlm is it possible to start a home based business for less than $100?

Yes… it is. So you probably want to know how to start a home based business online, or at least my idea, right?  Well it comes down to information.  When your talking about a online business idea, your talking about sharing information plain and simple.  Sure there are eccomerce sites where folks can shop and buy products, but if you have 100 bucks and you want to be in business today (yes today) then I have a way better way to start a home based business. How to start a home based business

Starting a business is really nothing more than beginning to build a system that will pay you while your not there.  A job is a an opportunity to trade time for money, you give a unit of time you get a unit of money.  One easy way to start a home based business online is to start a blog. I could say build  website but right away about 60% of people would eliminate it as an option as they have no clue how to build a website.

Starting a blog is free and easy you can start your first free blog at Blogger. While a free blog is a nice start to getting your home based online business off  the ground, it doesn’t stop there.  I’ll list a couple great resouces for starting a blog that makes money in just a minute, but before I do, I ‘d like to share that I personally earn a significant income every month because I’ve followed the exact same advice I’m giving you right now. No, I’m now a millionaire, but I do earn an income that lets me decide if and when I’m going to spend my time doing something else so I can make money. I love the lifestyle that what I’m proposing to has done for me.  It’s probably not for everyone. It is very quiet and and there isn’t anyone giving me credit evvery other day.

Why Home Based Business?

If I want to take 4 or 5 months off, I can, and I like that. Actually I think I wrote a post a couple months ago about step by step ways to make money online, yes I did and that was the link.  Alternatively just go start a free money making blog and get things going. I wrote another post about 3 Internet business ideas that will make money this year and next.

Rememeber home based businesses don’t have even a fraction of the start  up costs that traditional business models do, that’s not to say you can’t get up there in budget but that’s just not how to start a home based business. Start by doing something you have a genuine interest in and go from there. There are litterally millions of ways to make money.  The ideas to make money are endless, just think of a few right now.

I’m excited about this article because I’m going to share what I feel the most successful home businesses Internet Entrepreneurs are starting in 2011. Listen when it comes to creating a successful business a successful business model is absolutely crucial and your going to see exactly what that business model looks like today, in about 3 minutes.

I talk about all kinds of different small business opportunities here and most of them are home based business ideas that are in one way or another connected to the Internet. There is a business model (That I use myself) that I find is far superior to anything else online, THAT is accessible to just about anyone with an Internet connection. What makes this most successful home business model you can start using the Internet?  Well here is the short list:

• It is completely scalable.
  It is monetarily intelligent.
  The start up costs are on the extreme low end of the spectrum.
  The maintenance cost are cheaper that 25% of a cable bill. (in my case)
  It builds over time into a saleable asset.
  It can be managed from anywhere.
  Needs no employees.
  Liability and exposure can be reduced to nothing.

This isn’ theory either, this IS the actual model use today. Here is what it looks like:

That is the business model that I feel far out performs others for the reasons listed about. Now, there ARE other business models that would also offer the same benefits in the list above BUT this particular model offers way more options. It is the most flexible (easily innovated) business model I’ve found to build a successful home business on the Internet. Notice the three monetization methods in the diagram, there are more that can easily be added making this a very popular business idea.

One question or disagreement I might have with the diagram for purposes of illustration is this: If you were to put the “content” under the “traffic” I think the diagram would be more telling from an Internet business perspective.  Why?  Because the traffic is already there and you can create the content that will in effect “pull” the traffic in. See what I mean?

Is this a new business idea?

No, it really isn’t.  Now that you know what it looks like you’ll recognize it all over the web. The hottest new business are rarely the ones that make money (or sense for that matter). And keep in mind you can create a successful small business online without a “popular business idea”… I could show you dozens of profitable homebased business ideas that you would think are just plain weird, but they make money everyday. The more popular the business idea is the more competitive it will be, not that this is necessarily bad, just something to think about.

Most successful small businessesadd value through products or services being actively sought out by urgent buyers. Most successful Internet business ideas offer products or services that make sense on-line.  Think digital products, or information products. What makes this a smart business idea (or model) is that through contextual advertising you can also make money with an online business by connecting customers who are looking for products or services that cant actually be delivered on the Internet. And you can also make money via affiliate marketing through products that can be delivered online.  Ideally a home based business should use all monetization methods that will work and this one does.

Successful Home Businesses Internet Style

Most successful home businesses Internetbusiness people are using employ this business model in one fashion or another and you can too. Like I said I use this model BUT I totally arrived at it on accident and took me about 3 years to figure it out. If I were going to do it from scratch again, I’d use a program that teaches this step by step. I believe it would take my own 3 year process and cut it down Drastically. I think a person who knew they wanted to start a successful Internet business could start a home business in less than 30 days by using a good tutorial type program, AND the best “how to start a Internet business programs ” are cheap. Very cheap. I don’t recommend recommend spending hundreds of dollars on a course that promises you you’ll be rich in  a month. If you want to start a real Internet business using your own business idea then work with others who can and will actually help you AND who have already done it themselves.

Mack Micheals program is probably the most comprehensive membership site (over 12,800 members as of January 2011) for someone looking to start and online business from scratch AND for the person who is making a few hundred dollars a month from contextual advertising a few hundred from Click Bank or some other affiliate marketing. Listen, if your already making 3k per month plus online the program probably isn’t for you.  But you could pick up some great ideas and cancel your membership anytime you like. Here’s the thing though===> WATCH the video FIRST!  Mack literally walks you throughout the entire site. Watch the Video (its free) Just go to the website and scroll down to the SECOND video, he’s pretty transparent about what the program offers and who it’s for.

Over the last several years I’ve developed a decent income with my online home business and I wanted to share some of the most successful online home business ideasI’ve found to word well for me.  Before I get started, it make sense to acknowlege there are literally thousands of great online business ideas that people make money with everyday.  I’m just one person and certain ways of creating a successful business from home suit me better than others.  Don’t let my ideas get you side tracked.

What’s the Best Online Business to Start?

When it comes to picking the best online business ideasto start your home business, you have to look at what interests you and not only right now but over the long haul.  If you going to develop an online business it has to be in a “niche” and the most important thing to picking the right niche for your business is that you can stick with it over time due to a genuine interest you have in it.  The best online business to start is the one that you will  stick with.  I’ve also found it very beneficial to sticking with a niche you know something about already, I’d say 90% of my articles and blog posts I’ve written on small business ideas and home based businesswere unresearched and right out of my head.

I wrote a very popular post a few months back on the “The Best Business To Start” you should give that a read. I share some good business ideas about picking your first business to start and what the most important elements are for starting a successful home business.

Most successful small businesses are very focused on what they do to make money.  When it comes to the Internet it is no different and you need to stay focused on what works as you constantly reach out to see what might help your business grow.  Here are some of my best online business ideas for making money:

These are some of the home based business ideasthat I’ve used to make money.  Regardless of what you offer in your online business you have to achieve two basic milestones consistently:

1. You must add value to the marketplace.
2. People must reach in their pocket and pay you for that value.

Sounds simple doesn’t it?  And it is really, BUT it isn’t easy and I like to say that often because I think there is  a strong misconception about making money on the Internet and that is: That it’s EASY….

Once you have all the pieces in place it is a great way to make money and it does seem easy, but getting to the point of having a recurring monthly income that is significant is a tough road and knowing that before you start an online business is important. Expect it to be difficult and save the surprises for down the road when our income starts to soar.

Most of my business experience over the last fifteen years has been in the traditional business world and I can say flat out that the home based business model just makes more sense. There are so many benefits to starting a home-based business using the Internet, I guess that would be a great post in and of itself.

What is a Home Based Business?

Another point that bears mentioning is that there is a difference between an online business idea and a home based business.  Just because you have a home office and do the bookkeeping there doesn’t make your business home based in my book, but to clarify, what I consider to be a home based business is one that does not require you to go out side the home to perform a service in order to get paid.  Really what I write most about and what I mean when I say “home based business” is really and online business or Internet business.

Online Business Perks…

One of my favorite elements to an online businessis that I can literally work from anywhere and I do. I can use my blackberry when I have to wait in line for something, I can work from out of town as well as I can right from my home office and I like that.  Another upside to an online business is that they do allow you to make money while you do other things. I’m not tied to my Online business like a I would be a traditionally business or a job and think that is REALLY cool!

Here are some of the top tips I can offer folks who are using the Internet to start their own home business.  By the way, this isn’t theory I’ve learned these ideas first hand and I benefit directly (and monetarily) because of them.  Whether you have your own business idea or your looking for a model or concept to start your own home business, stick around and I’ll share a few things I’ve learned over the last four years.

First off you should consider developing an intelligent business plan when you start your business.  I can’t say I did this from the start, but I learned If I didn’t do this one thing, I’d be constantly wandering around in circle like I did my first 6 months online. Your own home biz plan needs to include these items at a minimum:

• Budget
• Time Commitment
• Marketing Strategy

Obviously this list will be longer, but I strongly recommend having a plan in place before starting you own home business because there are always other people, and priorities biding for your time, money and there’s always another “marketing product”. In case your wondering whether I’m just writing an article to update the blog, I’ll share what I did to learn that these are the top 3 things to have in place before you start your own home business.

The first six months I started online I worked every waking minute (that I wasn’t running my other traditional business) on my home business.  I spent over $1500 on Internet ads the first 30 days and almost spent $16,000 dollars on a website (didn’t actually spend anything)  And after sixty days I felt like I got my rear end kicked and was pretty frustrated. Save yourself the trouble and come up with your own plan.  Plans change, but you should have one to begin with when starting your own home business.

Home based business ideas or Internet based business ideas seem really cheap. It’s not like your buying real estate or a bunch of equipment or materials like you would in a traditional business.  But Listen, costs creep up and if you don’t have a budget and stick to it, you’ll wished you did at some point…it’s inevitable.  Keep a close tab on monthly recurring expenses.  This is one of the black holes of the Internet and a great way to bill your services online if you offer them.  Apparently some of us are to lazy to cancel a subscription for $10 bucks a month so we just keep on paying it because its easier.( *myself included)

If your serious about creating a successful home business you better budget your time as well.  I know for me this has been critical. If you’ve owned a traditional business you probably know the feeling of “the work is never done”…The issue with an online business is that it is so accessible and if you have Internet and a computer at home it may always feel like a good time to work. It’s important to have the support of your family and those around you most and I’ve found that the support can wane if I’m always working, so pick your work time and stick to it.

Most successful home business have a good plan that is followed. That said, it pays to stay flexible too.  I’ve increased earnings more than once by going down a path I hadn’t considered in the planning phases, so I think it makes sense to keep your eyes open for opportunity even in unsuspecting places.

I’ve found a few unique ways to stay flexible with my home business that allows me to implement new business ideas and test them on my website here.  Many times I can get a feel for the demand for a business idea, product or service just my writing about here on my website.  Having your own website if a must if your going to have your own home based biz.  The good thing about having your own website is that it has become very easy to start your own business website and it doesn’t cost much either. I’ll talk more about one of the most successful home business models and online business opportunity I’ve found, and I’ve been seeking (spying) out the best home based business ideas for quite a while, in hopes of finding a good fit to offer here at CreateLiberty.Com…. 

A bitter sweet experience with a turnkey business opportunity in the personal development industry a couple years ago started what has become a very successful network of home business and small business websites. I’ve always loved business and truly thought I found a successful home business I could use to create an on the go income…I just wanted to be able to work from where I was and I didn’t want employees again…..That isn’t asking to much, right?…Well it didn’t work out, not for me anyway…. So what happened? 

Well, long story short, it was my first go around with this type of business (direct sales business model with a “2 up compensation plan”) and I wasn’t prepared for what success required, nor was that ever clearly defined. I felt like I was spinning my wheels. 

I’ve always been good at what I really set my mind to….Always. 

I think most people are, know what I mean? 

Think about the things you have really excelled in. Wouldn’t you agree that the things that captivated your full attention and ambition turned out to be successful? 

So why didn’t I achieve the success I wanted? 

Primarily the two contributing factors that were obstacles to my success were, I did not understand lead generation, and the compensation plan…Here is what I mean. 

I bought a website that was supposed to be “proven” to work great for connecting with intelligent individuals who were looking to create a significant income working part time hours from a home office. The website was CRAP, primarily for one reason: It would never attract natural search traffic (the free kind) which is how you got here today. 

The compensation plan was what it was. Being my first experience doing business on the Internet and my first “business opportunity” I didn’t want to lay out a bunch of capital right off the bat, which is understandable, so what did that mean? 

I generated over 23k US dollars in the first month and NEVER saw a PENNY! Ouch!! Still stings a little bit, mainly because I here a little voice saying “I told you so”, which was from a “well meaning adviser”….. 

So at this point I felt trapped, here is why… 

I felt like in order to be successful I’d basically have to lead people, people just like YOU, along a path that would leave them feeling the same way I did that day… or week. NOT FOR ME! 

I want to feel good about what I do. I work hard and invest time into what I really care about and since I’m an entrepreneur that usually includes my businesses. I didn’t feel good about the prospect of leading other along a path that I felt was a dead end and that is where I found myself. 

Here is what I’ve learned since: 

Most successful home based business owners do a few common things and believe me I’ve studied a long list that would likely fill this page. The “common” things or successful strategies to starting a building a lucrative and successful home business that delivers both free time and lots of cash (net profit) ALWAYS: 

• Follow a System
• Own their Marketing Machine 

Home based business ideas, good ones, come and go. Five years from now the best online businesses will be different from the ones to day, know what I mean? Here is the thing…. If you own your marketing machine, it won’t matter ( I can help you with this). Remember that business I mentioned earlier, well it bombed….If I had been building a marketing machine specific to that business I would have bombed too, but I didn’t and thank God for that. In fact, instead of “bombing” I went on to build a successful network of small business websites that generate a passive income month after month around the clock regardless of where I go, what I do, who I’m spending time with or what other business ventures I’m working, how about that! 

Oh… another thing that most successful online business entrepreneurs do is: They look at their home business like a real business and plan accordingly. Looking back I was thinking only short term and not approaching the opportunity that the Internet (or the business opportunity) really offered. The short term is important and I wouldn’t recommend starting a home based business that wasn’t geared to be profitable within the first 30 days or so because I know how power profitability is, more from a mental standpoint than anything. 

How to Create a Successful Home Business

If your still here and engaged in what your reading, I bet you have a real good reason why success is important. I mean what does earning and extra 5 to 10 thousand dollars working less than 20 hours a week do to your life? We all have our own reasons, but here is the thing, if success is so important to you then why not go ahead and create a situation where you success is inevitable? I’ve actually done this, and it isn’t that difficult. 

Is creating inevitable success really possible? 

Success isn’t mysterious anymore, not today, not in 2010. If success is anything, it is a science, hell there is a book with the name “The Science of Success”….. 

Everyone, including you, has what I call an Inevitability Equation that pertains to success, it goes something like: 

If I do this then I can only experience success. 

When it comes to having raving success in your own cash generating home based business it is all about defining what it is you have to do. Most people won’t flat out share what they do, for what ever reason it just doesn’t happen a whole lot… 

…But, what if a business model, or the compensation plan is structured so this happens freely and is even and element of elite results? You bet… you’ll get the goods! 

The task becomes clearly defining the “this” in the equation. At the end of the day “this” will include: (this is big) 

• Daily Time Commitment
• Participating in Correct Training
• Developing a workable budget
• Developing a Daily Method of Operations
• Staying disciplined with DMO and budget plan
• Understanding and engaging in Income Producing Activities
• Developing Leadership Skills/ Helping Others 

Basically what this list means is that you have a certain amount of time you can devote to your business without totally disrupting the balance in your life. You come in with certain skill sets and you may need to pick up a few new ones, training will allow that to happen quickly. You have a budget now an apparently it works to one extent or another. You need to make room in your budget for you business expenses, lucky for you cost of operating a profitable home business are peanuts compared with ANY type of a traditional business. There will be certain things you will do everyday, or at least the days you set to work on your business. This “daily method of operations” will be your road map to success and it takes the guess work out of “What can I do today to help my business grow”. 

So now you’re honoring your time commitment made to the business and engaging in the training you need for success. You’ve developed your budget and know what to do each day. The next thing to really get good at is staying focused and disciplined with your DMO and operating within your budget. You will understand which activities produce income and you will be engaging in them more and looking for ways to increase the time spent on income producing activity. 

Leadership is really more “Doing” than anything. In the home business world results are the badge of leadership. If you work at the ideas already mentioned you’ll be getting results and begin helping others. 

I like helping other succeed and this is on of the key elements I look for in a good home business opportunity. The best home based business ideas will have a compensation component that rewards those who are willing to help others actually achieve results and the top incomes (multiple six figures) are exclusively reserved for those who are successful at helping others. 

The only way to fail at this point is to Quit. Now that is power, talk about being in the driver’s seat of your financial future! 

Often times people fail or quit an otherwise profitable and successful home based business opportunity because the try too hard. They try to achieve their goals in 30 days when they have goals that require more like 18 months to legitimately realize… There is a good chance they overlooked the budget part of the equation too. Throwing money at the wall, wasting cash on crappy marketing, never made anyone a success in the world of home business; it won’t work for you either. Trust me I learned the hard way! 

Really think about the life you would like to create. Think about the big goal…. If you have a compelling enough goal, one you really, really want to achieve, then you will realize the value and give it the time frame it deserves. Trust me your worth it and so is your goal.

I just put up a new page called “Starting Your Own Business is a Big Deal” you can grab a cup of coffee and read the 2,162 word article I just posted on the starting your own business page here on this site.

This isn’t a left brained guide to starting your own home business or anything of the sort. It is a compilation of the things I’ve learned about starting businesses over the last 15 years or so. It might not be what you think, but I tell you what, it’s worth a read.

Starting businesses is something I enjoy and am able to do it at record speed by exclusively starting home based businesses.  I’m not talking turnkey home business opportunities although some of these are the most successful small businesses you will come across on the Internet today. I’m talking about simple businesses from simple online business opportunities to consulting and back to making money from home with websites.

The Best Business Ideas

The best business ideas are the ones that work.  A few years back I started focusing my efforts exclusively on business ideas that allowed me to work from home and not have employees. I do some outsourcing from time to time. I do get help, but I don’t have the financial burden that employees bring and I also enjoy more time freedom by starting only home businesses.

It’s a long winded article on starting your own business and it isn’t done yet. If you would like to leave feed back, I would appreciate it. If you do the “social” networking thing I’d love your help spreading the word.

It has been my overwhelming experience that most people never leave the planning stages of a start up and for this reason alone most fail before they even begin. I go into more detail in the article about that, and out line my simple method for starting my own home businesses.

The article talks a little about  my theories on funding, how one business is better to start than another and why, and even into the anxiety you may be met with when starting a business from home for the first time.

I spend a considerable amount of time evaluating online small business ideas and find that the best business opportunities are the ones that incorporate the real world and the Internet. If you have a business concept that does this and your excited about it, it might be the best small business idea to start.

The home business model is an amazing tool, combined with the Internet, that enables you test, and even start your business for a mere fraction of the cost associated with a brick and mortar traditional business.  That’s why I love the home business model and focus on only those businesses I can run myself and do it from home, or at least 80% from home.

$1,500 bucks for an office lease is not bad, it is definately a justifiable expense.  On the other hand I can justify what I could do with the $18,000 per year I’d save by making the same business spin from a home office.

Under 200$ to Start a Business? Yep!.... Or even Free.

So whats my top business to start in 2010 for a couple hundred bucks and part time commitment?  This one home business idea was an “aside” of sorts, at first, for my successful small business and is quickly becoming a top earner and is the most passive income stream I have to date.

I know, the “so simple anyone can do it” business ideas across the web are enough to make a person vomit. But the title’s true and this business model is by far the easiest business to start from home.

What is the best business to start in 2010?

A Blog….

Yep.

It is a great home business idea and one of the most accessible business models on the planet when it comes to cost, risk, time commitment, and skill set requirements. I mean you can start one if you know how to type! That probably includes most folks over the age of 16.  In fact my daughter, who is 10, has a couple sites and when she is in junior high, she’ll likely make over a grand a month!

Most successful small business are really quite simple just like this one.  Whats nice about starting a business from home is that your “free” time becomes an asset and if you don’t have free time you can create some, regardless of how busy you are.

Easiest Business to Start

Good topics to start this business are endless, from topics about work to products you might use around the house to hobbies like camping or dancing or hiking or skydiving.  All of these make great topics to create an easy home business revenue stream and the best thing is you can learn everything you need to know for free. It is one of the easiest businesses to start from home bar none.

This is a business that can be started for under $200 dollars like I said, actually, it can be started for free on a free blogging platform. I recommend using a self hosted word press platform, just because that is what I’m used too. It really doesn’t matter a bit.
