Our Best Advice on Starting a Home Based Business

Advice on starting a home based business abounds, depending on you situation you likely either confused, looking for prospects, or looking for links…. I wanted to offer a little advice on starting a home based business for the person is confused about the process, how people make money online and if starting a home based business is right for you. Would you know what to do if you found a lucrative business opportunity?

I get questions each day about starting a home based business, they range from things like, ” How to start a business with no money” to ” how to be successful without a degree“, to  ” How to use the Internet to earn over 100k”… The list goes on really and I wanted to provide a few links to some of the articles we’ve written over the last while that hit on hot topics and advice on starting a home based business.

There are thousands of smart business ideas.  Regardless of who you are, you can find a side business to startthat will provide you with extra cash and offer a greater sense of fulfillment.  From green business ideas to web business ideas, the world is your oyster when it comes to finding a low cost business idea to get started on.

I have marketed a successful home business opportunity on the Internet and learned what it take to develop profitable websites  over the last few years. I’ve talked with many interesting people and been able to help a few.  I’ve talked to people who have lost 100k jobs and moms who just wanted to find the best work at home based business to start.

How to Start a Home Based Business

The best advice I can give a person is to learn more about yourself.  Who are you? What do you like?  Growing spiritually, personally and professionally usually go hand in hand.  I recommend approaching it in the order I just listed.  I’ve tried to earn more money, and did… I’ve tried to have a good relationship with myself and others and have at times.  But when you focus on having a sound spiritual center, what ever faith, religion or creed that might be, I think you’ll find you have a better go of things.  Knowing what you stand for and who you are an want to be is valuable information when you look to start a home based business or even a new career for that matter. Give it some thought….

Personal development goes a long way in creating a successful home business.  Business ideas aren’t what is valuable, its the person who knows how to make them work.  Personal development programs and having a personal development plan is wise and will likely have a huge impact on your success in starting a business.  I offer a free ” Think and Grow Rich” book on this site, actually it is a think and grow rich ebook.

Many home based businesses on the internet will require some sort of lead generation, whether its for selling products or enrolling others. Finding business opportuntiy seekers can be tough.  Many succesful home business entrepreneurs will buy home based business leads online  through lead vendors to help get their business started.  Starting a home based business that includes a good lead generation strategy will move you forward faster, think about that.

If your serious about starting a home based business and really succeeding then you will have to learn to generate your own leads or maybe develop a partnership with someone who can do it for you.

The best home based businessesare the ones that inspire you as an individual to do the work necessary for success.  It may sound like a no brain-er, but people often get poor advice on starting a home based business and are sold a lemon, not because the business model is lacking, but because there is not personal connection with the product or service your offering, think about it. Enough of that… I want to shed some light on starting a home based business. Its my light, my experience, it is knowledge. My home based business knowledge is what  I know, not what I think or my opinion….it does not mean I won’t know something different next week, because I will.  The best place to learn about online business or home based business is, you guessed it online.  This post is not meant to teach you “how to” technical info. Its meant to share my “what really happens along the way” info.  You can learn every thing you need very quickly when you know why you want to learn… More on that latter. (the good stuff is down there)  The Internet is really an amazing resource, the most amazing of our time.  And that is where I have learned the “how to” nuances of home based business. Just to clarify, when I say home based business, I’m not talking about a contracting business, or a home cleaning business, I’m talking about connecting… with yourself, other people and your purpose a business that is intuitive and evolving, much like myself, and maybe you too…. Let me explain.

Two years ago, I paid someone to check my email…. and pay my bills…. and send my daughter flowers for her birthday, and check with my travel agent on a trip coming up. It isn’t that I didn’t know how todo these things or that I was Incredibly important or rich…. I was kinda dump really, maybe even a bit schmuck-ish. I was looking for an experience, a feeling…. something that was always there. I did all kinds of goofy things, said things I didn’t mean, bought things I didn’t want, and did things I wouldn’t do today. It was like an unquenchable desire for more, a itch of sorts that could almost reach, and if I contorted just a bit more I could finally be satisfied…. So on I went with unattached, and sometimes silly actions in my business and life….About two years ago, I realised why.

That is more “what this post is all about”.  Entrepreneurship and the home based business industry are more than picking the best cms platform to start a home based business or the best auto-responder or the best home based business opportunity to start this week. It about thinking from the end. Its about being real, the best we can as we can. Thinking from the END…

As a philosophical end the statement is over used, unclear and, well USELESS. Here is what it means now after fumbling, and struggling with this idea that I saw repeated over and over. I saw it in Maxwell’s books, in Napoleon Hills books, in the Magic of Thinking Big, and, really I could go on and on. Thinking from the end:

1. Let go of your ego, your logical mind and the attachments you have to pleasing others.
2. Ask, what do I want…. and wait for an answer you don’t understand.
3. If you could be anyone, who would you be…AND why?
4. If your fed up with a situation, relationship, business, client, or outlook, look for the one you want….But first, Get clear on the one you want. This is magic. When you know what you want, you start to see it.. your relationship may not physically change but you will look for and, as the observer, affect the observed. (passively) Do the Clarity by contrast exercise in Micheal Lousier book. The Law of Attraction. Google it.
5. Do the “my perfect day exercise” ( write a short story that starts with “my name is… and today I…”.
6. What you want in life is likely to be different from what your mom or best friend want for you in your life. Its not there fault. When someone says they want the best for you, they are clueless… more so than you. Many people will be scared shit less to learn of what they want in life.  Many people will be to cowardly to look. You don’t have to you know, but you can.
7. This might seem like a hell of route to take in finding a home based business or learn about how to start one. For me starting a business is really an opportunity for a new beginning. A new you. A business start up, is an opportunity to experience your best self anew. Here are some things I’ve learned about starting a business… This will make more sense, I promise.
8. The business you start will not look anything like the business you have in five years. Your not buying shoes.

If you take the points above seriously and talk,learn,and visualise on your findings your business will take the perfect shape that is required to produce the life you most desire. And that is the function of a business. ( do you agree?)

A business is alive and intuition is more reliable than a plan. Start with a plan. Its like a map to the end goal, but get this, you won’t find roads on the map, sometimes, not so much as a trail. You may find that you may journey through swamps from time to time, remember its not about you and your ego, its about the end, that thing you think about everyday.

One of the most difficult things is knowing when you have become successful in business. Success in the end, the minute before ”you arrive” will be you realising that your already where you want to be. Nothing you will need is missing now, every thing is already here. Possession is not always necessary and this really trips people up.

So here is a summary of my philosophical take on starting a business, becoming an entrepreneur and becoming comfortable with the entrepreneurial spirit that rests in us, certainly anyone who has hung on this long…..

• Know What You Want.
• See Yourself Being It.
• Commit to Success.
• Use a Plan Until You Realise Your The Plan.
• Help Others.

What is being at cause?

Its the opposite of being of effect.

Many psychologist insist that to the extent a person is at cause in their life is the extent by which they experience peace.

What’s that mean?

Well, one way to look at it, is to think of your life right now. How much is you reacting and how much is you creating. Are you “managing a Life” or creating and living a life of intentional experiences.

Are you a victim of outside forces acting upon you or are you a force acting on outside consequences to create an experience you desire?

Being in control of your life is a fine balance, when your looking to live in a healthy and fulfilled way.

You don’t have the power to control certain things, most things, really, right?

What we do have control over are our thoughts, our attitudes, and the responses we choose. Responses to situations, people, circumstances, and events. Think about it.

Not Much Traffic Out Here!

I’ve been on an Island in Lake Michigan Since Late May. On and off, I should say, don’t call anyone, I’m not stranded or anything, it’s inhabited, sort of. I’ve given a lot of time to being in the woods, sailing, making cool things with stone, and working on my websites. Which is what I’m getting to.

It’s funny how analytical I’ve become in the last few months, and somewhat obsessed, I suppose. I’ve been checking analytics way to much.

Get this- I’m writing a post right now, not to give it all away, but, I’m writing a post on how normal people are out doing things on Friday nights when caffeine ridden webmasters are polishing their calloused mouse fingers.  And Its FRIDAY night… I should have waited… Damn!

Back to my point though, Its probably a good idea to just get away and join the other 95% of the planet at least one night a week. I struggle with this, as I’m a huge fan of momentum. I like working from a place of intention, building momentum, then taking an objective look at results. I find this is much more productive then trying to plan the rest of my life or a whole year in business. It’s a bit of a catch 22 I’d Say.

Online Entrepreneur Comes Clean

I don’t control my traffic count by obsessing over analytics, I don’t control it at all. What I control is what I do on a habitual basis, if I pay attention.  Friday night traffic is just fine even if I get a few hundred less page views. Maybe its a call to join the land of the living, get more in touch with what is pertinent, which will improve results more than anything right?

I don’t want to mess with momentum. Momentum is so easy, so natural… But, in the end what kills it can be rolling with it too long. I find discouragement sets in just about the time I lose focus of the intention I had a week or two before.

Balance is learning to take one step to the side and watch momentum from the side lines for a few days.  Stepping back in with a new perspective puts you back in charge of the reigns and renews your vision. Persistence doesn’t come natural to everyone. This being said if your a hard charger, like I can be, your likely a F— it all for a few days champion too. Here’s the point and a bit of unsolicited advice…

Step back in an intentional productive way instead of a drained, discouraged, and emotional way. You stay in power, and its much more healthy and balanced.

I just got done sitting in on a Wayne Dyer show where he interviewed a Doctor on healing, the mind, DNA, and the power of intentional thinking.  You know, it seems this alternative healing school of thought is opposed to the traditional medical approach at first glance, but is it?

Who is the medical Authority?

Well as with most things it’s not real clear and in reality separation is just an illusion. We are all connected, is the mantra of Dr. Dyer and many others.  There really is no authority anymore in this world we life in. It’s not like we can take one Medical Doctor and another, who represent, believe in, and are proponents of the two different schools of thought and get a definitive answer.

I’ve always been interested in alternative healing, the mind and what the human body is really capable of. Disease and the increase of it is really no mystery, yet, the masses tend to think it is. A vast group of people believe the medical institution is hard at work to cure disease and learn the causes and cures for every illness. Truth is, there not.

Doctors, Nurses, and Students.

I’ve had the opportunity to work and live with doctors, nurses,and a few surgeons, and even some students during mission work in third world countries. It was really neat. I’m not in the medical field, unlike 80% of my family, and I was intrigued at how the medical community, or hierarchy, or what ever, operated.

What are your thoughts, and experiences with alternative healing? Creative healing methods, some of which are well documented, are really far out.

I guess the Healers job and the Doctors job is to allow or assist the body in healing itself? ….We love comments.

I think that most of us would agree we’d rather weigh more a wear a smaller size. This maybe a new concept to many women out there but it is an important one that we grasp. You really don’t care how much you weigh as much as how you look in a swim suit or your favorite black dress right?

Best Fitness Strategy.

So when you begin to work out and get into shape to lose weight it’s important to keep your real goal as the most important goal. For most people that are going to be working out and getting into shape their goal is just that to “get into shape“, however many people say they want to lose weight.

How to Change the Shape of Your Body.

Did you know a women can actually reduce the size of her body and stay the same weight or actually gain pounds. And this is better than losing weight. Why is it better? It is better because pounds of fat and pounds of muscle burn calories. The more pounds a person weights the more they can eat and stay the same size.

Reasons Muscle is Better than Fat. 

Muscle weighs more than fat, is more compact than fat and burns more calories than fat. Think of it like this a pound of muscle is the size of an orange while a pound of fat is more like the size of a grapefruit. If you have 10 grapefruits they will take up more space than 10 oranges. Also the 10 oranges of muscle taking up less space burn more calories than the same 10 pounds of fat.

So if you have just started working out it is better to measure yourself than rely on the scale for proof of success. Measuring yourself is easy.

All you need is a measuring tape, you can pick on up anywhere that sells fabric. Then measure your waist (smallest part around your stomach area), lower waist (around your belly button), hips, thighs, bust, and biceps. Make a little chart write down the day and all your measurements. It is best to do this in the morning before eating or drinking to get the most accurate measurements. Measuring each week is a good idea. More than that and it’s easy to get discouraged.

Finding your purpose exercise.

There was a time, and I can’t say regret it, that finding my purpose in life was the last thing I was looking to do. When we are young, some of us anyway, are driven by emotion and desire. Some people have a time in life when they kinda stop and ask, “what’s it all for”. I have here in this post a little personal devleopment exercise I use to help me discover my purpose.

Coming to the realization that reality is multi-demensional and being healthy means having awareness of that was scary for me.  Before I thought about purpose, I think my purpose was to feel good, have fun, and not get locked up in the process.

It is interesting, my life now has some of the same themes woven into it, like the locked up part. No really, having fun is important in my life, and I like to feel good. I do different things today to feel good and have fun, but the idea is still part of my purpose in life.

Finding your purpose is personal development.

I’ve been an avid student of personal development for a large portion of my life. I was introduced to personal development through athletics in college.

Finding your life’s purpose is a commitment and process in my experience. Some people think differently, based on their experience. Steve pavlina has a great article and pod cast on “finding your purpose in about 20 min.” Which is a neat title, you can find that here.

I’ve used a number of resources while getting clear on what I am here for.  I’ve read “The Purpose Driven Life”, it did not do much for me personally, kinda confused me really. I like simple exercises, they work better for me. Over all awareness is powerful for recognizing and discovering your life purpose.

Bob Proctor, the “Grand Father of personal development ” has written and taught much on the subject.

How to Find your Purpose.

Here are some questions to ask your self:

1. What would you do if no one was looking?
2. Why did you/didn’t you go to college?
3. If you were to die tomorrow, what would you regret missing the most?
4. When was the last time you had goose pimples? What were you doing?
5. If every morning you had one million dollars in your account and everything costs a buck, what would you buy? The first thing?
6. What is the one thing that you most want someone to say about you at your funeral?
7. Who is the one person you would meet if you could meet anyone?
8. What is the one thing in your life you’ve been given that you cherished the most?

Who is god? Why is God, God?

The funny part about finding your purposeis that it is an inside job. You find it by getting to know yourself. Its not like a sock were you could just ask your wife, mom, or roommate.  “Hey mom have you seen my purpose?” No… not the same.

Finding your pupose and living your purpose took a unique turn for me and this is not meant to be an answer to a the question. I noticed that the more I looked, wondered, and was aware of finding my purpose the more I understood and “found it”. I’m left with a conclusion, an open one, that to look at myself, relate to myself and grow is purposeful.

Keeping an open mind and knowing when to take a different approach to achieve the desired result is another key to success. Trying harder is not always the answer and this is hard for people to accept.  Listen, everything in your life right now got there as a result of your best thinking and actions, right? Everything in my life right now is a result of my best thinking.  Thankfully I can change my mind at any moment and you can too.

Success Principle Number Four: Work Smarter and Think Outside The Box.

You would never leave for a road trip to California without a road map would you.  Having a clear goal is a lot like having a destination at the end of a journey. Knowing exactly what you want is a another key element to achieving success.

Success Principle Number Five: Set Clear Goals and Know Exactly What You Want.

Success tends to happen in small steps and a quantum leap from time to time.  It seems the quantum leaps can happen in our lives almost effortlessly, they are like gifts.  Doing the next thing, the thing right in front of you is your responsibility and the next right thing is what success demands of us.

Success Principle Number Six. The Next Small Step, The Next Right Thing.
