There is a boat load of information online on how to do affiliate marketing for beginners and it isn’t my intention to add to the noise with this post but to share some insight into the successful affiliate marketing mindset you need to develop as a beginner.  I’m also going to show you a resource specifically for those of you WordPress users who are building a profitable affiliate marketing business.  I get a lot of comments and emails from people asking what the best way to start an online business is and I usually respond with one of two answers: Blogging or Affiliate Marketing.

They really go hand in hand and are the foundation of a successful business that operates completely online.  That isn’t to say that you should only consider a business that is run exclusively on the Internet.   I’ve owned and still own businesses that operate off line, online, and I’m currently developing two that do both.  Affiliate marketing can make any business more profitable as another form of marketing, but this article is going to focus on how to do affiliate marketing for beginners online.

The Affiliate Marketing Mindset

In order to build a real business you have to really get the mindset. I heard an analogy that told the story of bringing water to a city.  The story clearly revealed the correct mindset that you need to have in order to build a successful affiliate marketing business as a beginner. Here is the story:

There was a town called opportunity and the town didn’t have water readily available in the city limits so people would get up every morning, grab buckets and go out to where the water was and carry buckets. One day an ambitious young man named Bill got the idea that instead of going to his job everyday he could just carry water for people and they would pay him.  He realized he could make more money carrying water for the towns people.  So he went and bought some buckets and started carrying water. People loved it and soon more people wanted him to carry water that he could handle so he hired a couple employees to help him. Then Bill bought a truck and a trailer to keep up with the demand. Life was good, he was making money and people were loving the fact that they didn’t have to carry water any more.

NOTE:  The story so far, pretty accurately depicts a self employment opportunity for Bill and jobs for his employees.  If this guy quits carrying water, he quits getting paid. I’ve been self employed and still am really, but there is a big difference between being self employed and owning a business. You should do both.  Read the second part of the story below:

One morning as BOB was watching Bill’s bucket carriers bringing water to the city and he got an idea.  Bob started contacting people and buying supplies, and pipe.  Bill went out and had another well dug and he started building a pipeline from the well to the city.  People would laugh at Bob, saying he was crazy, after all he wasn’t making any money at all and the pipeline wasn’t getting done very fast.  Bob kept at it though, he learned the things he needed to learn (coaching)  about building a pipeline and was persistent in his efforts.  About 8 months latter Bob had completed his pipeline.  The towns people had never seen a pipeline and frankly they thought Bob was off his rocker and wondered why he would waste so much time building the pipeline.  Well on morning Bob went out to the town square and turned the valve on his pipeline and water came rushing out. People were amazed.  Bill was out of business because Bobs water was much less expensive.

Bob built a business.  A business is a system or set of systems that work together to create a desired result.  Usually those results have something to do with using resource efficiently, the two most common resources are time and money.

If you want to know how to do affiliate marketing the right way, think of building a pipeline in stead of carrying buckets.  Learn how to build an affiliate marketing system that works.  Sure there are some smart “bucket carrying” tactics too and they should be a part of any beginners business model, but when you start with a plan to build a real business you’re always building toward that even while you’re bucket carrying in the beginning.  The time to have a map is before you go into the woods.

One of the crucial keys to learning how to do affiliate marketing as a beginner is getting the correct information.  There are literally hundreds of TACTICS you can implement in affiliate marketing.  But tactics alone won’t help you build a successful online business with affiliate marketing.  What beginners lack is a solid plan, with clear steps from the beginning to the end.  Sorting through the noise has become almost impossible and it has created a ridiculous learning curve for beginners tying to master affiliate marketing.

From time to time I install a pop-up form on this site that asks visitors the question: “What it your #1 struggle in building a successful business online”. Essentially there are only a few real ways to make money with online with an Internet business. Yes, there are thousands of tactics, strategies and methods, but they all fit into these 3 categories. Trust me. If you are evaluating an Internet business idea that doesn’t do one of these 3 things, it isn’t a business.

The best Internet business model integrates all 3 of these categories and you can verify that for yourself. Just go look at the most popular online business sites or bloggers or whatever… Every Internet business must do at least ONE of these three things, the Best Internet Business for 2012 does all 3:

1. Make money selling someone else’s products.
2. Make money selling your own products.
3. Help someone who is doing #1, #2, or both.

UPDATE: I’m including a third option to make money with your Online business, which is “get paid to” opportunities. There are several ways to make money by taking surveys, writing, reviewing products and more. While I don’t consider these ways to build a viable Internet business in 2012, you can use them to make money. Every Internet business falls into one of those categories, the best Internet business does fits into all three. When I first discovered this I was a bit taken back and, to be honest, a bit overwhelmed. First off I didn’t have my own products to sell, let alone have a clue how to develop them. I wasn’t sure how I could sell someone else’s products either, it sounded like a lot of work. I did understand what it meant to help someone else sell their own products or someone else’s. I learned about creating niche websites which is just a website that focuses on one topic. This, in turn, creates a targeted audience and these “Targeted Audiences” are a hot commodity to those selling products in that niche. This site is one example of a niche site. It isn’t as focused as it used to be but it still services the “business ideas” niche. I cover just about any type of business on this site but most focus on small home based business ideas and Internet business models. I also dabble in network marketing and affiliate marketing here on this website.

Making Money Selling Someone Else’s Products

This is probably one of the most popular online business models and it has many different names. The most common name is affiliate marketing. Have you heard of affiliate marketing? Not all business model’s that pay you a commission when you sell a product are referred to as affiliate marketing opportunities. It would be a lot simpler if they were. When you sell someone else’s product and they pay you a commission you are said to be an affiliate of that product.

Affiliate Marketing Business Model

I’ve done my fair share of affiliate marketing and I continue to use affiliate marketing as a top income stream here on this site as well as on other sites I own. I go into greater detail on making money with affiliate marketing on a page I’ve created with the same name. There is a link to that page below. Here are some other traditional affiliate marketing models:

• Pay per action: You get paid when you encourage someone to do something.
• Pay per lead: You get paid when you encourage or promote an offer that results in a “lead”.
• Pay per call: You get paid when someone makes a phone call.
• Pay per view: You get paid for each view you promote, like a video or banner ad.

These are some of the most common ways you can get paid selling someone else product through the affiliate marketing business model. Once you have a targeted audience set up it is a good way to earn money and over time it becomes somewhat passive. Network Marketing Business Model

I’m sure you’ve heard of network marketing or MLM or Multi-level marketing. This is another way to earn money with an online business without having your own product. There are thousands of multi-level or network marketing companies, some have been around for decades. Some network marketing companies are successful online, but not many. Network marketing has always been a people business and most MLM’s are still an off-line business model. I’ve only seen a couple that are successful online. Network marketing or MLM’s allow you to get paid to promote the parent company’s products and you also get further compensation when you build a team (down line) of people doing the same thing. I have a love/hate relationship with network marketing and only consider it as a viable business if the opportunity is relevant, add real value, and can be done online. The Business Opportunity Business Model

The business opportunity business model is another profitable business idea that lets you make money in your online business by selling someone else product. The business opportunity model falls under some FTC guidelines and I’ve written an extensive article about the business opportunity business model. Essentially when you promote a business opportunity you earn money when someone else buys the right to promote the business opportunity. This may sound odd, and I think it is, but essentially that is the name of the game.

Most business opportunities have real products that you likely will have to buy yourself to earn money when other people buy them. I was involved with a business opportunity in the very beginning of my online business; it is actually what got me started blogging and learning how to make money with an Internet business. Here is my $.02 on business opportunities: Essentially you are paid to recruit. If you like recruiting and are good at it, you can make serious cash. It is the least passive business model I’ve used online. Make sure you have your legal paper work in place. Make sure you are prepared to refund people’s money.

There are some really profitable business opportunities out there. Some of the most profitable business opportunities have commissions of $1,000 and up some up to $5,000…. Big pay days. One of the income streams I use on a couple of my sites is selling ad space to people who promote business opportunities online. When I say they are profitable I’m not only citing my own experience in past but also the long term advertisers I sell ad space to on my small network of sites. Essentially, just about every successful and profitable online business entrepreneur got that way by developing his own products and selling them online at some point. I’ve also learned that most of the top income earners online didn’t start out that way. I currently know a have dozen full-time Internet entrepreneurs who don’t have their own product and they enjoy a $250,000 per year income online. I say this because it can be scary creating your own product; I’m currently working on that right now. The bottom line is; not having your own product is absolutely no reason to not start an Internet business in 2012 and work hard to get where you want to be. The best Internet business model isn’t all about you and your own products anyway; it’s about adding value and owning a unique spot in the market place.

There are several ways you can develop a “product “ that can only be found in one spot, your website. It doesn’t need to be a paid product either, one of the most profitable methods online is what is called the funnel. Many people use their own product as the first step in the funnel and monetize traffic with affiliate marketing offers. So what are some of the ways you can use your own product to enhance your Internet business and make more money online 2012?

Well, I’ve seen a lot of different products and I feel the most important product of all is a free report. Even those top income earners I mentioned who don’t even have their own product that they sell, have a free report. The free report is one of the key elements to building a list of targeted prospects who you can later market paying products to. This is an older method of online marketing but it still works. It actually works a lot better if you have a targeted audience that is passionate about your topic. More and more people just don’t have time for emails, BUT if they have a passionate interest in the topic you’ve chosen, you are in luck.

One of the businesses I currently own is a Farm Fresh Produce Market. People are passionate about the food they eat, some people. The customers who stop at the market are very interested in food. They have learned the importance good food has in overall health. I’ve build a couple different websites related to vegetables, gardening, and fresh produce and I suspect that this will turn into a profitable Internet based business over time. I don’t assume this because the niche is SOOO profitable, because it isn’t. But the people in this niche are passionate about the topic. If I can find a good way to add value to this niche I will be paid handsomely for it for sure.

The Top Product Ideas for Internet Businesses

I spend more time online than most people spend at work and I’ve seen a LOT of different products that work to monetize an Internet business. I recently came across a product that I absolutely wanted to buy; in fact it was the exact offering I would like to have for my own online business. I couldn’t afford the product #1, and #2 I’ve basically already been through the product in that I’ve studied the basis of the product for years. I don’t remember but think the price was $3,900.. Maybe I could create a product along these line that was much cheaper??? Hmmm.

I guess the point is that even if you go out in the woods for a month and create a product you can sell in your Internet business, it won’t be original and it doesn’t need to be. Very few of the top product ideas I’ve seen for Internet business entrepreneurs are completely original and when they are they are many times very insignificant. But guess what, it’s still your own product and having your own product goes a long way to producing credibility.

That would be a good way for you to create your own product for your online business.

Make Money By Helping Someone Else Make Money

The next way most profitable Internet businesses make money is to help someone sell their own or someone else’s products. The simple way of saying that is make money by selling advertisement in one of many of its varied forms. One of the most popular ways to make money online is blogging, and this is the most popular way to help someone sell their products. Essentially you’re connecting vendors with customers. Once you’ve developed an audience as a blogger you can sell advertising. There are smart ways to do this that offer a solid income and there are some not so smart ways to do this that may pay well for a while, then go bust. Many bloggers turn to AdSense as their key money maker, as I did early on.

The problem with relying on an advertising platform like AdSense is that it can go away at any time. One of the things I learned the hard way was that it isn’t smart to build your Internet business model around one platform. I would have been doing things completely differently if I never would have applied for AdSense and I would have been making a lot more cash faster.

Here is the trick though, what I’ve learned how to do is find the best business ideas that let me earn these small incomes that are RECURRING. I’ll work my tail off to set something up that earns $30 a day over and over and over and over…. You get the picture.

I think one of the problems faced by most would be entrepreneurs online is that they don’t feel they have anything of value to offer at first and they lack credibility.  The best beginner business ideas need to address that and this one does. Most people who are promoting a home business, and mlm, a network marketing company or a direct sales company are all looking do do what?  Generate leads. The most important (and difficult for some) thing about these business models is generating leads. If you have no prospects to talk to you don’t have any money to count either. Right? This obvious and simple solution will take care of that problem, it will also pay you directly and give the person you just helped out a boost in business and a new way to earn money. Crazy simple, but very effective.

When I first started my online business I used a free blogging platform, why? I’ll define and share with you the person who this is a perfect idea for, it will work for a ton of different people, but this is the “exact match.  The person who is using the Internet to build a networking marketing business or promote an MLM is a perfect fit.  Top Tier business opportunity promoters are included in the “perfect match”  If you have a Face Book account or a website that deals with earning money from home or the like, this is a perfect fit and will make money.  NOTE: this doesn’t take the place of a primary business you are promoting, it will help it immensely when you follow the stupid simple system.  If you already have a personal blog or website this is no more difficult, only you can actually make some money.

I’ve had less than 20 years of experience as an entrepreneur so I don’t attempt to be an expert.  But I have had experience with successful offline, more traditional, business model AND online business ideas.  There is a big difference between an online business and a brick and mortar business, depending on the online business you choose to start.  The thing that interest me most about a business model is scalability.  I like to ask myself:  Am I going to love this business if it is actually successful?

I’ve learned the hard way that not all businesses scale well and when they don’t it really sucks.  So I would say the best online business is one that scales, for sure.  Another important element to me when choosing the best online business is how much work will be require to maintain the business.  This question can be answered many times by analysing the systems in place that turn the busines idea into a real online business.  For example, if you start an online business by writing web content for people, it will be difficult to get paid if you decide to stop writing, it isn’t much of a business model.  It is a decent self-employment model and some people do well with it.

The Internet is wonderful, in that it creates so many possibilities to implement ideas and that creates a ton of opportunity.  Lets go back to the example of the article writing online business.  Let’s say that same person who enjoys writing article decided to write some article and create a website with those articles.  Then our aspiring author contacted some folks who might sell products or services that relate to those articles and invited them to consider advertising on his new site.  This is one way to create an online business out of skill you might already possess and the Internet makes this possible. I’ve done it several times.

I would say the best online business ideas are ones that let you do just that, turn a skill you already have or can acquire into a business system that allows you to get paid over and over.  While this might sound easy, it really isn’t.  First off it is difficult to do something, especially in the beginning, that you don’t know will work.  There is a big difference in writing 10 articles for $100 and writing ten articles and then posting them to a website. You have to learn how to set a website up, you have learn what a good “niche” to write about would be from a commercial standpoint, then you have to learn how to get traffic to your website.  All this has to be done before you’ll earn a penny, and that is difficult for people who may not have attempted it before. The good thing is it is easy to learn these things very quickly today, I found a membership site the other day that teaches this stuff in a brilliant way.  I’ve essentially came to the point on my own where I do most of what they teach, but it took me over 3 years to do it.

Actually if you looking for the best online business, the one I just described has many different names and nuances, but I’m telling you from personal experience it is one of the best online businesses to start for a lot of reasons.  If you want an online business that you can create a significant, recurring income with that will pay you bills and then some, it is a great business model.  Back in 2004 I started looking for the best way to start an online business and creating blogs or websites that earn money is a major component of that business today.

Knowing what is the best online business for a beginner should take several important factors into consideration, here are a few of them.  First off you probably don’t have a whole lot of money to risk when your first starting out, so don’t.  It’s unlikely that first business a young entrepreneur tries will end being the “jackpot” business idea of the century, so don’t try to become Donald Trump overnight. Create a realistic, but meaningful, goal and stick to it untill you’ve realized your goal.  One of my early goals was to create an online business that earns $3,000 per month in a very passive way.  I didn’t care how hard I had to work in order to create that business, I just wanted to know that once I did the work the business would continue to pay me over and over, month after month.  I figured if I could meet that income goal with my online business I would have the “breathing room” I need to make good decisions and take advantage of more opportunities as they arose.  That was my goal, it meant something to me and it was a compelling goal to.  That goal inspired me to work, a lot, and I knew it would be worth it. The best online business, or any business for that matter, for a beginner to start is one that can create a compelling result worth working hard for.  I’ve been the “business opportunity” bit too,  while I don’t recommend it and didn’t have directly favorable experience, it did help me clarify what I wanted out of the business I started.  It helped me to define my “best online business”, so to speak.   I wanted what these business opportunity recruiter were selling, which was basically just time and money.  At that point I had had both, but never at the same time.  It seemed like I worked 90 hours a week and it didn’t matter if I have $150,000 in the bank.  And when I had a lot of time, usually in the winter, I was broke.

Choosing the Best Online Business

Another good point to make about choosing the best online business to start is to say:  Make sure you start a business that you are truly passionate about and interested in.  The chasing money game never turns out well.  When you are deciding what type of business you are going to start online, make sure you have  a deep seated reason for starting it.  For many people, myself included, the result that the business will create is the where the passion comes in.  When I started building websites that make money every month I could have started some in the home security niche, there was a ton of money to be made in that niche.  But I had no real interest in the topic so I picked something else I was interested in and I’ve actually earned more money because of it.

We live in really cool times entrepreneurial speaking and young entrepreneurs continue to out do themselves every year.  Successful business ideas are all around us in many ways they help to create our very culture.  You don’t have to invent the next YouTube to realise the benefits of a successful business idea and there isn’t a certain age you have to be to get started either.  When I listen to people, who may be family, friends, customers, or strangers, talk about business ideas or starting a business I often hear a few common themes that are really just myths.  Myths that keep many people from starting something new.

What many young entrepreneurs or aspiring business owners might not realize is that you don’t need to have all the details to get started, many successful business owners don’t have a clue “how” something will work, they just know it will and they get started.  One of the “secrets” to successful business ideas is that someone, somewhere…. Did something.  Sound simple, I know, but stay with me.  When you do something, when you put something out there, things happen.  You get reactions, insight, feedback, and sometimes results.  If you can take a business idea and do enough with it to get some results you may just be on your way to the developing  a successful enterprise.

Many of the entrepreneurs I know are, in part, dreamers. Maybe it’s a requirement?  Action is the key to creating a successful business ideas and at some point you have to Do Something. There are always reasons for not doing something.  Here are some of them I’ve used myself:

Work at home business ideas are one of the best business ideas that you can start with very little money.  Many start home based business with no money, if done it myself in a round about way.  When I first started my online business, which is run exclusively from my home office, I had absolutely no starting capital invested.  The online business I have today, was started with no capital. I have a friend online who is a carpenter by trade, apparently a few years back he took a fall and was hurt pretty bad.  His name is Mitch and what he decided to do in his recovery was research ways to earn money online.  He was, probably for the first time, without a means to sustain his income doing what he had always done.  Instead of moping around, he got a pretty good grasp of the Internet.  I’ve watched him learn how the Internet works and recently I’ve seen him apply his knowledge of the Internet with his skill as a craftsman. Just like Mitch I found a niche on the Internet that inspired me.  I love writing, studying and researching small successful business ideas and learning from other entrepreneurs.  This website is one example of a way I can add value and share with others what I have learned.  Successful business ideas often marry one skill or talent that you already have with a new one, Mr. Dillman is a great example of that.

Home Based Consulting Business

If you have expert knowledge or experience and expertise in a given field you can likely sell you knowledge as a consultant.  Starting a home based consulting business can be a low cost business idea.  It may cost you nothing.  It’s actually something I would like to do in 2012 to some extent.  I’ve learned a lot about the Internet over the years and there are some small businesses that could benifit greatly by using the Internet and a business website correctly. One of key elements for me starting this type of at home consulting business is to make sure I do it in a way that is scalable.  I’m not interested in starting a purely service based business and I don’t want to work 90 hours a week. To me successful business ideas have to deliver what the entrepreneur wants too.  What I would likely do is have a few templates made that would work in the industries I’m familiar with.  This is one way that I could offer a web based solutions to small business owners without having to spend so much time.

Every few months or so I talk about some of best at home business ideas people are using to start a small home business and I wanted to put one together for 2012.  I started my at home business several years ago, actually it was 2006.  I’ve had some ups and downs both in terms of revenue and enthusiasm and it’s a safe bet you may experience the same thing.  That’s why it is important to take your time when you are decided what the best business idea is for you personally.  Having a genuine interest, or better yet, passion for your industry or business model is crucial to sticking it out through tough times.  I’ve written an article on what I feel the best home based business model is you can read and learn about the small home business model I use.

At Home Business Ideas

Over the years of researching at home businesses I’ve found most fit into a few categories.

1. Direct Sales
2. Network Marketing
3. Affiliate Marketing
4. Web Publishing
5. Franchise Ideas

While there are certainly more types of at home business ideas, these five cover a large majority.  By the way,  most any at home enterprise I consider to be one of the best is going to be web-based. I just feel that the leverage the Internet offers creates the best opportunities when it come to start ups.  I live in a rural area and I see revenues from all over the world, literally.  I couldn’t begin to do that with a traditional business model unless I had hundreds of thousands of dollars to invest.  I was able to start my home based business online for less than a hundred dollars.  And the expenses are ridiculously low and will remain that way.

Let’s do a quick break down of those five industries starting with Direct Sales, which is really just a home based direct sales job.  A parent company does all the heavy lifting like product creation, shipping, order fulfillment, etc.  You ad value and thus make money by prospecting and connecting customers with these products.  Many direct sales opportunities pay well even offering commission as high as 70%.  If you like sales and you want to start a small home based business ideas  you can do that with a direct sales business idea with very little out of pocket capital to get started. The second on the list is Network Marketing which is also referred to as MLM.  Network marketing is probably one of the most popular low cost business ideas and some have grown to make a lot of money with them.  Network marketing is a people business.  You recruit and develop a network of people who both purchase and sell products to end customers.  Most experts claim it takes 3 to 5 years to establish a good income with a network marketing opportunity.  There are thousand of these opportunities to choose from that sell all sorts of products from health items to food, and even energy. Affiliate marketing is much like direct sales and network marketing but with a twist.  Online most affiliate marketers create a  website that is specific to a certain niche then they build an audience at the website and promote other people products in the audiences interest group.  Many of the largest retailers today have an affiliate program, Amazon is one of the largest retailers who offers an affiliate program.  You can be an affiliate of both physical product and digital products.  Often the digital products are training type courses and they can have great commissions. Web publishing is another great at home business idea if you want to start a small home based business but don’t want to invest a lot of start up capital.  A web publishing business also can work well with affiliate marketing, direct sales and network marketing…. It all depends on what type of website or newsletter you want to publish.  The home business model I use incorporates all of these ideas together.  While I don’t currently do any network marketing or own an at home franchise idea, I would have a great platform for success because of some of the websites that I’ve published.  Web publishing is fun and can be quite passive when done correctly.  Revenue is earned via advertisers along with commissions from affiliate products.

The last idea I mentioned was home business franchise ideas.  I wrote an article about franchises, what to look for and I gave some history on the franchise business model.  If you want to learn more about at home franchise ideas you should check on that article.  Some home based franchises do have higher start up requirements but you often get more of a business model when you start a franchise.  There are many consulting type franchise ideas and some that are service based for 2012.  Not all franchises can be run from you home office so make sure you do your research.

Besides the five popular industries for starting an at home business there are many more service type business ideas you can start at home using the Internet.  They are dependent on the specific skill sets you have and also depend on what you really like to do.  I’ve seen several companies springing up in the Content creations niche.  People like writing articles so they sell unique articles for web publishers all over the world.  You could design websites, do Internet marketing,  could offer all different kinds of coaching too.  These are all some of the best at home business ideas because you can start where you are at. You don’t have to quit you day job right at first and you don’t have to have a ton of capital to start these business ideas.  Can you make money from home with these Ideas?  You bet, I do with several of them.

A few years back I started a blog and have since started several more. I’m often asked the question, “Can you make money from home with blogging”…. The short answer is yes and I wanted to elaborate more on that with this article.  There are several reasons why I think blogging is  a great way to make money from home and I’ll share some of those later.  Using blogs to make money isn’t for everyone, I get that, but if you don’t mind typing and you have a creative tinge you may find it is an excellent way to make money.

Many people don’t realize that many “websites” that you visit are actually blogs.  Blogs operate on a CMS or Content Management System and they are a great way to easily organize information.  Many CMS platforms are very user friendly.  The first blog I made was a blogger blog and it took all of about 5 minutes to set it up, no kidding.  Currently I rely on Word press which is another free blogging platform.  Personally I feel word press is one of the best blogging platforms is you want to make money with a blog.  You have more options than other free services and there really aren’t any rules, you can’t get kicked off.  I lost a business idea blog earlier this year because the provider thought it was spam.  It was all original content, I owned it for several year and I liked the thing. I’ll continue to try and get it back, anyway…..

Starting a blog to make money from home is an intelligent home business idea but keep in mind it is different than many other money making opportunities online in that, you have to be patient.  It doesn’t happen overnight and patience is on of the most important factors to starting a successful money making website.  I was doing  a link exchange request the other day and the gentleman emailed me a list of his blogs.  He must have had 50 of them, they were good too…. he is making well over six figures a year with his network, maybe closer to $250,000 dollars.  Sure he worked his tail off to build his network, but now he outsources content creation and sales. Good Small Business Ideas

In my opinion a good small business idea has to provide three things:

1. Profit
2. Time Freedom
3. Sense of Purpose

When you find a business idea that does all three, life can become magical.  Another important part of a good small business idea is scalability.  You want to start a business that doesn’t become a monster as it becomes more successful, most do.  Blogging is a good fit for the criteria for a good small business idea because it satisfies these crucial elements for success. Automation is an entrepreneurs’ friend and blogging offers tons of smart ways to automate. It takes me no more time now to operate my money making blogs than it did when I started. Another attribute of a good small business idea is saleability, can you sell it someday?

Not all small home based businesses are easy to sell, most aren’t.  A blog network with proven revenues can fetch a good amount of money and it is fairly easy to transfer ownership.  I’ve bought websites and had the up and running on my hosting within hours.

How to make money from home with blogging.

When you decide to start a money making blog you need to pick your topic carefully.  A good blog topic for making money should be evergreen, meaning it will be relevant 5 or 10 years from now.  Don’t start a blog based on a fad.  You can writes posts on the blog about fads, that works, but don’t focus the whole site on it.  It has been suggested in the Internet marketing community to choose a domain name with your keyword in the name and I concur, it helps.  Once you have your topic and domain name picked out you need to choose a CMS for you blog and get hosting.  Hosting is fairly inexpensive, costing less that $10 bucks a month in most cases.  Once your blog is live you are ready to roll.

There are a lot of other details that go into creating a successful money making blog, I’m not trying to over simplify the process. A blog post could never come close to explaining all the details to creating a successful online business with a blog.  There are several training programs online that help you start a blogging business. I recommend joining a membership type blogging community that has been successful for 3 or more years.  A couple of the training programs I purchased were close to 2k…. ouch. I was already into blogging for a couple years and didn’t really get the value from the programs I had hoped.  The reason I recommend joining a membership community is that instead of spending a bunch of money all at once then being on your own, a membership allows you access to get questions answered and keeps you up to speed with changes.  Remember, when it comes to online digital products money does NOT equal value. One of the best programs I know of that helps people make money  from home with a blog quickly is one of the cheapest.

You can learn everything you need to learn about making money online using a blog for free. It takes about 2 years, at least it did me.  I had no clue that programs existed when I got started and I wish I had. I have met several friends along the way because I took the long road, but many of them are contributors to the community based tutorial sites that help people make money using blogs.

Making money now, or making money at will is an important part of any business.  Maybe you have a service you could offer other people.  A service that you get paid for.  I wouldn’t advise starting a purely service oriented business on the Internet (because passive is better) but having something you can do today and get paid for today is a nice option for a beginner.  Many of the best business ideas I’ve found online don’t earn money immediately, they take time to build.  Once they are up and earning they are quite passive and the income will continue to build if your willing to work hard.  Cash flow is important to any business and ways to make money now will help you with initial cash flow. You’ve probably heard of getting paid to take surveys and it’s one example of how to make money now even if you have no experience on the Internet. These are 5 of the best home based business ideas I’ve found to be sustainable.  There are many more that may work better for you.  The are some of the best business ideas you can start for under $100, except for maybe the franchise opportunity.  That could come later.  Starting a home business in 2012 is a great way to diversify your income and make you less dependent on your job or another business.  I recommend starting a home based business in your spare time, it is a great way to hedge risk and make it more stress free start up.  Starting an online business in 2012 is a great way for  a beginner to get started as an entrepreneur. 2011 was an interesting year for me and I was able to test several entrepreneurial ideas that I had been thinking about for some time.  Not just new businesses but also some business and financial principles that are personally relevent to me.  The path to building the best home business has been a game of trial and error for me, but the process has become much more productive as I move along.

I started my home business idea several years ago and my home business happens exclusively online.  Really I guess you could say it is an Internet business as it could surely not happen without the Internet.  The Internet business and a more traditional business working together is where I learned (through experience) first hand about  an entrepreneurial idea I had suspected was a solid financial principle as well.

Over the last several years I’ve slowly learned how to build a passive income online, in the past year or so this online income has grown to pay most of my bills and I’ve enjoyed the time freedom it allows me.  Granted it still takes work, but I do have a significant amount of control over how I spend my time, and I like that.  Who wouldn’t, right?

During the course of turning my online entrepreneurial venture into a reality I became quite detached from the traditionall business world and kind of missed working with people.  I wanted to start another business that would allow me to stay engaged with people and expose me to further opportuntities so I started a Farm Market here in my local community.

Just to clarify: If you want to create passive income, don’t start a farmers market!

Anyway, the Michigan farmers market that I started required some capital, not a lot, but some.  So I was able to borrow some from a friend and then I decided to invest some of my own money from my home business online.  This is where the learning came in.

I’ve decided to make it a personal financial principle of mine not to use income or capital fomr a passive income source to fund a non-passive income source.  It doesn’t fit when you have a passive income goal like I do.

There is always more to the story and I do believe the market will will do very well in the future and it did enable me to meet lots of interesting folks and it also exposed me to new opportunities.  Here are a few of my top entreprenuerial ideas of 2011:

1. Keep passive income building or invest it in other passive income business ideas.
2. Starting a business online was the smartest thing I’ve ever done.
3. Always look for new opportunity, it is there.
4. If you aren’t being exposed to new opportunities, then start a simple business.
5. If you can outsource activities in an online business that is 90% passive Do it.

My Title: ” What’s the Best Small Business to Start in 2011, for 2012” is partly a question and partly an answer to an email I received last week, an email that is quite frequent in varied ways.  I have several people ask via comments on this website, email, and telephone calls what the best way to start a home business is, or they might ask what is the best small business to start right now. It’s almost like having someone ask what the hottest band is right now or the best CD to buy at virgin.

Let’s face it we are in the age of the “Start-up” so to speak.   Starting a small business today can cost as little as a hundred bucks or so and more and more people everyday are looking at becoming an entrepreneur as a serious option.  I don’t have an industry or specific franchise business idea, or anything of the like to recommend.  I like the Internet and business models that utilize the Internet to make money.  I’m always asked to put that in a box. It’s tough.  I wrote an article quite a while back that became very popular on the Internet, it was titled, “ The Best Business to Start for a Beginner in 2011” You can go read that and learn what I feel are some of most important criteria for deciding what the best business to start is given you particular situation.

Another popular article I read talked about the most successful Internet businesses to start and gave three examples. Either way you chalk it up you have to be forward thinking enough and patient enough to know that any business you start in the next few months won’t pay off for a while.  At the beginning that’s a pain, but it’s also what creates opportunity in the long run.  If it were easy, everyone would do it right?  I mean if you were guaranteed a paycheck next week, it wouldn’t be a business it would be a job, right?

Choosing the best business to start is often times more practical than entrepreneurial, I get that. …. And I’ve done that, I know how it works.  One of the things I always like to tell people is to think about what they really want.  Most of us want to feel successful, we want to apply ourselves and we really do want to achieve.  When you start a small business it really pays to think about what you want the business to provide for you.  Most of us are more than willing to pour our hearts and souls into a new business idea, but what are you expecting it give back in return?  Many business ideas will never give you time freedom.  For example, success in a service type business will usually only earn you more work.  Everyone will want YOU to do their landscaping or replace their muffler, is that success to you?

The business I manage online is great. It is specifically designed to do exactly what I  want it to do and it performs very well. I’m not exactly sure what you would call it or what box you would put it in, I’ve wrote extensively on what I feel the best Internet business model is online. I wrote another article on Internet business ideas that make money, it gives you a couple way to start making money online.

There are literally thousand of good ways to make money online, and I even wrote a post titled  “Step by Step Way to Make Money Online“…. Imagine that.  there are business opportunities that are packaged for people who already have jobs, there are small business franchise ideas that thousands are starting every month, there are literally thousand of smart ways to start a business in in 2011, but most all of them won’t offer rewards until 2012, so get started right away.
