I love writing posts like this one right here because if your here and your looking to start making money from home with a blog, I’m about to save you around 2 years on your learning curve. I’ve been making money online for about 3 years with a small network of home business blogs and in the last year or so that income has grown into a significant income.  I’m sort of a “do it yourself” kind of guy and I don’t say that with a whole lot of pride when it comes to succeeding online.  There is so much useful information online and when I look back I could have had a much more profitable home business if I’d been willing to seek out those who were prepared and willing to help me right from the start.

Do Blogs Really Make Money?

One of the most successful home business ideas I’ve come across in the last 4 years has been money making blogs. I didn’t start out at an earth shattering pace but over time my blogs have really grown and started producing a solid significant income every month. While I’m not a six figure blogger by any means, the income I make from my blogs helps pay the bills and I enjoy it immensely. Do blogs really make money?… yes they do and if your looking to make money from home a blog is a great way to make money for a beginner. It may not seem like it but I think a blog is one of the best home based business ideas to start.

I’ve put together an online business article here that reveals the top online business start up ideas from a popularity stand point. I’m not asserting these are the best online businesses to start, I’m merely saying these are the most common paths to home based entrepreneurship that use the Internet.  Not all home based business entrepreneurs operate an online business. These top ways to make money from home are all of the Internet business variety, and they don’t have to include getting payday loans on the web.

What are the perceived advantages to an online business?

Based on my own experience and research these are the top reasons people prefer the online business models compare to other business models.

• Most online business ideas offer an opportunity for creativity.
• Most online business ideas are non service type businesses.
• Most successful online business models are in some ways passive in structure.
• It is realistic to own many online businesses, not just one.
• The expenses and overhead of most online businesses is extremely low.
• The start up cost of an online business are lower, both in terms of time and money.

I’ve realized these points to be advantages over most any traditional business and these are some of the reasons I really love the online business model. The other thing is people.  If I don’t want to deal with people, I don’t have to. The way I’ve structured my business allows me to turn it off and on, but I still make money. If I have other plans for a few months, like sailing, I just don’t schedule any consulting clients or deal with direct ad buys or any of that. My more passive income streams will still flow and I really like this about an Internet based business.

Blogging~Why is blogging the first choice among online business entrepreneurs? Because it looks easy….Seriously.  It makes sense too, that the most popular way to make money from home (or at least try) is blogging.  I mean I couldn’t tell you how many dead blogs I’ve come across online.  People think they can start a blog and make a ton of money, after 30 to 60 days of not making a penny they quit.  But blogging is still probably the #1 most popular online business start up idea.

#2 Online Business Startup Idea

Affiliate Marketing~ Closely related, maybe even a brother to blogging, affiliate marketing is the next choice for beginner online entrepreneurs. It makes sense too.  Beginners don’t have their own products so it seems logical to try their hand at selling someone else’s.  And affiliate market is a great way to make some serious cash.  In fact I’d say it’s on of the top ways to make money that has created the most “millionaire” or “multi-six figure earners.  I’ve personally witnessed product launches (not my own) that have made several hundred grand in the first two months! Lot’s of money.

#3 Online Business Startup Idea

Web Publisher~ This is the third most popular online business start up and its a lot like blogging.  Id say a web publisher is a successful blogger.  They write on real topics that have a real interest and they create quality content that helps people understand the web or anything really.  There are health related websites, fitness related websites, you name it.  So how to publishers make money online?  By selling ad space.  It’s amazing how big some of these sites are and ad revenues can really add up (no pun intended).

I know there are a myriad of different business ideas online right now and new business ideas coming up every day, but I’d say these are the top online business start up ideas and also by far the most popular ways people try to make money from home.

The Truth Home Based Online Businesses.

The truth is, based on my own experience and research, that most successful online business entrepreneurs worked real hard to get the results they have.  Most, not all, were entrepreneurs to begin with or at least entrepreneurial minded.  Personally I’ll tell you that I’ve worked just as hard with my online business as I ever have a traditional business.  I like the results I get with my Internet endeavors much more.

What comes to mind when you try and think of the best small business to start in 2010?  To think of the best small business I’d say most of us would  look around our community and would find something missing or a business that could be improved, maybe even a business that is no longer around.  For a beginner, a person who is first time entrepreneur, choosing the best small business to start is probably going to start with what your doing now or something peripheral.

I recently wrote a post about the 5 factors important for choosing the best business to start for 2011 business ideas I invite you to give that page a read as well.

I make a full-time income online with a small network of websites I own. To many it wouldn’t seem like a business at all. I don’t have employees, expenses, or headaches…. all things commonly associated with owning  a small business.  It took me a couple years to generate a significant income… It can be done much faster though. If your a beginner looking to create an online income, I recommend checking out the article I wrote titled, “Top Online Business for  Beginners” ,it list three specific paths to creating a passive income that are uniquely designed for a novice.

Some of the best small business ideas are so simple it makes people wonder how they ever work and others that make millions you probably don’t even realise are out there. Focusing on serving an end customer is key.

Thousands ( because I’m too lazy to look it up) of businesses are started every year by technicians who know how to “do it” and figure they can do it better than the chump they are working for.  One of the best small business coaches, Micheal Gerber, calls this the “E-myth” and refers to an “entrepreneurial moment” as the actually realisation that you could indeed deliver better service or deliver a better product faster than the company you work for.

For example if your a drywall finisher and an employee, it would make sense that starting your own drywall business is logical.  Indeed this is one of the most popular paths to first time entrepreneurship.

Is the business that makes the most logical sense the best small business for a beginner to start?

Probably not….

The answer didn’t set well with me when I first learned of the idea that just because your a great drywall finisher doesn’t mean your a great entrepreneur. But what did I know.

Ten or fifteen years later it all makes sense. I was in my early twenties then and nothing made sense to me unless I did it.  My sole decision making process relied on my “knowledge”.  I only knew it if I did it.  When you know something, you have knowledge of it and the best way to get it, maybe the only way, is to do it.  I’ve since learned that knowledge is expensive, especially if its my own.

Tip: The next best thing to personal knowledge….Someone Else’s!

The Best Small Businesses

All of the best small business ideas, the successful business start ups, have several things in common. I don’t pretend to be a trend spotter, cause I’m not, but studying small business start ups and entrepreneurs for the last 15 years has shown me some things. I’ve learned to stick with businesses that I’m genuine interested in. I like fresh produce and spreading the idea that eating good food is important, most of us eat garbage! So I’m developing a group of produce markets. I also like the game of making money. I love my Internet business and making money online is really fun. I like passive income but hate the idea of rentals. My parents had rentals I helped with growing up and I just don’t like the rental business. I’d say on of the best businesses to start for  a beginner is Affiliate Marketing.

Working with others who have success and knowledge/experience in areas you may not is the smart way to go about  starting a business. Money magazine says that online catalogs or stores is a booming business. I wouldn’t know where to start when it comes to that so I’d find someone who does.

Its kind of like reading books on wealth creation, success, and leadership.

Did you ever notice, after the 15th business book or so, they kind of all say the same thing?  I call those same things “principles”. They are old but not rusty because they are used everyday by millions of successful entrepreneur, parents, and professionals around the world.

So what are some of the recurring themes of the best small business enterprises today?

• Scalability.
• Ease of Innovation.
• Accessible Target Market.
• Likelihood of a loyal following.
• Relevant.

I’ll add minimal downside to the list because that is a huge factor when we are talking about a first time entrepreneur starting a small business, more about that in minute.

Scalability, simply put, is will it work in the beginning AND when you’ve hit it right on and the business screams GROW!  This is a big deal when you are choosing the best small business and how you intend to start and grow the business.

Example: If you wanted to develop a blog network and you just started a couple wordpress blogs, making nice posts like this one, its great, but it ain’t scalable.  Unless of course you had a plan to build a platform that would launch a more scalable business idea like a crowd sourced content creation strategy.

Example: Starting a nation wide fast food chain by building a restaurant down the block isn’t scalable, however developing a franchise business model to accomplish this (in one life time) is…. i.e, MacDonald’s.

Ease of Innovation, used to be “innovative”.  An innovative small business idea doesn’t cut anymore. Its not about how innovative a small business idea is, its about how fast you can innovate within the small business you create.  I see it like you have to have a tight niche target market that is loyal, because you rock, yet you have about a dozen different ways you can go to keep the market, grow the market, or increase spend from the same market you have. How easy is to offer something different, how fast can “what’s next, be next”

Example: Walmart (not the expert here) started with stuff.  They sold a bunch of other people’s stuff.  It was about distribution. They had a great business idea and developed the best distribution model. They didn’t make a thing…Except CASH.  Fast forward 20 years and now Walmart offers eye care, hair styling, banking, shoe repair, automobile service, and on and on.  They basically started to distribute service the same way the did products. I think that sums up what I intend to explain when I say ease of innovation and how the best small business is the one that can grow many different directions without loosing you current loyal following.

Accessible target marketis sort of a no brainer, but think about it. Not every business start upis going to be profitable especially if it is geographically challenged.  If your small business start up is going to rely on a target market that is spread across the world, how will you reach them? Can you reach them via the web? If so, how will or how can, you develop a loyal following.  Where do they congregate now?

Example: Where I live we have a farmers market, you probably have one too.  The surrounding communities and local governments worked to provide a place for farmers markets. Its great for farmers who bring their produce and handmade crafts on a Saturday morning and great for the people who need the items.  It was a way to make the market accessible to the farmers and the customers, saving both time and money. Not bad!

The last two items on the list go hand in hand.  If you have a relevent business idea, it should be likely a loyal following could be developed. I think the ease at which this happens is a crucial point when deciding what the best small business to start is in your community.

What’s the Best Business to Start in 2012?

The best small business to start in 2011 is no different than the hot business start ups of a decade ago in principle.  The products the business offers or the services rendered will change, and man do they ever, but the best small businesses are solving apparent and relevant problems, making someones Else’s life easier, or entertaining someone who is.

Oh I almost forgot. Downside.  I read a neat article the other day that talked about downside I think it was on www.quicksprout.com The point Neil made was that no downside is a hell of a lot more important to the person who is starting a business for the first time that a huge upside.  It follows “don’t put all your eggs in one basket”.  If you only have a couple sources of income it probably isn’t best to chase down a small business idea because of a huge upside, it will involve risk. Risk that could take you out of the game.  Partnerships, timing, and creative business development are all ways to minimise downside on large upside business start up. Think about it!

As many of you know and others might have guessed, Create Liberty Enterprises uses wordpress cms (content management system). Should you use wordpress? Not sure, I’ll tell you why I use wordpress for this small business website and why I plan on using it for other online business concepts in the future though…

I use self hosted wordpress for one reason, it works!  What’s that mean? Well I’m an entrepreneur, and I like good ideas, smart ideas and ideas that make money. As I’ve grown older, I also like ideas that have a passive element to them. I use wordpress because it has passive elements. Social networking is the craze, I benefit when a social network-er visits and stumbles or diggs my post. I don’t have to do anything, see the little icons at the bottom, yeah those little things help me promote my site. WordPress is a system and when it is used correctly you can get passive, and free traffic from the search engines.  I earn a little money from that free traffic just from the ads on the site. This blog has been online with wordpresssince June of this year (2008) I get a few thousand page views a month. I couldn’t do that with blogger, Yeah, I know, it can be done, I just have better luck with wordpress. I do have blogger blogs as well and they have helped making this blog a success, but I’m sticking to my story, wordpress rocks. (check out the wordpress guide at the bottom of this post)

Is WordPress good for a Small Business Website?

Small business owners are bull headed, no surprise. So they do what they want to do. Problem is why they do what they want to do. Small business websites are viewed by entrepreneurs as stores, or representations of themselves and their business, there not. A website is a reality. A self contained, self advancing, and self creating reality. Only a dumb ass would build a store, office building or small business in the middle of nowhere, and that is what most website online really are. Small business owners are not dumb asses and neither are the web designers and sales people on the internet. The designers and marketers know what the unknowing entrepreneur will buy, so that is what they sell. WordPress, because of its functionality and architecture is like a small business location with roads coming to it from all directions.  Some roads are unfinished, some are not good, some are great and will bring steady traffic or customers from day one…when done correctly.

If your contemplating whether or not using wordpress is is the best route to take, spend some time looking at source code. It is sometimes difficult to tell by looking at a website, if it is wordpress or not. Right click anywhere on the web page (besides a photo) and click “view source” nose around a bit, near the top and you will find many of the website you really like are indeed, wordpress websites.

The functionality of wordpress is superior to most systems I’ve seen. The support is second to none. The themes are wonderful in wordpress, and changing the entire look of your small business websitecan literally be done in under five minutes. Keep in mind, I am not talking about wordpress. com, I’m talking wordpress. org, There is a free version of wordpress, and a “self hosted” version. If you are looking to use the wordpress site as a small business website, go with “self hosted”. Register you own domain, and find a web host.

If you want to get natural search engine traffic, the free kind, and want to control your website with ease and on your own, wordpress is worth a look. Credit Cards For Small Business or Home Business Entrepreneurs. Good or Evil???

Using a credit card to fund a small business has become a common practice. Using five or ten credit cards is common too. Being in $8,000 to $50,000 dollars in credit card debt is common too. Should you use credit cards for you home business or small business? Well, I guess the answer to that financial quesion is, Do you want to be common.

Funding payroll with a credit card is great as an extreme emergency. The problem is in the principle. It’s not that using a credit card is a bad thing, its not, we know that. The point is, if your having payroll obligation difficulty it is a symptom of a deeper problem called cashflow management. Some of the best small business entrepreneur’s get into cash flow problems,  but correcting them with credit cards is dillusional.

Credit card offers for entrepreneurs looking to fund small business purchases are always available. No news here I’m sure. Well I think it depends. I don’t use credit cards. I got rid of my cards two years ago. I didn’t like the vigilance I needed to maintain in order to manage the debt. I don’t like the word mandatory any more than the next entrepreneur, but lets face it, there is always a price to admission. The good news is than the costs of an online business will be much less and front row seats won’t cost much more than the nose bleed section.

First of, your going to want to think about a website.  I will make a series of recommendations at the bottom of this post as to particular options. This is the single most important piece of advice you will ever receive about starting an online business…. Pick a machine, a tool, a solution for your website. Do Not spend 5k on a beautiful website. The Internet is huge and certain web applications (fancy for website builders) will save you thousands of dollars and years of hard work. Actually, depending on your business model and service industry, the wrong type of website will guarantee failure! So get this part right!

Hosting: Free to $25 Per month. I pay $6.95 a month with a 3 year deal… I love it.

Once you pick a website platform your going to need hosting. I recommend you host your own website for a number of reasons.  Blog platforms like blogger and word press (free hosted version) are great if you want to share stories with family, friends and an online community but if your looking to draw in targeted traffic and build a web business don’t do it this way. Why? The biggest reason is that you don’t own the site, the owners at anytime can simply erase your site! Ooouch! You can expect to pay anywhere from around 6.95 per month and up to around 25 per month. Not Bad, right.

Auto Responder Service $10 to $30 per month. I pay $19.95

The next thing on the list for things you really need to have to get your online business rolling is an auto responder service. What’s that?  It is a tool that will allow you to manage your mailing list, create mailings, newsletters and promotions to send to your list of people who have subscribed at your website. I will make a recommendation here as well, later on in the post. Depending on your business and the web platform you choose to use, you may not need an auto responder right away. And don’t make monthly payment, by the way, on anything you don’t need or can do for free. Costs of an online business can skyrocket just like a traditional business. You must be intentional about keeping costs under control. Cost creeeeeeep is the profit monster, don’t let it eat up your PROFITS.

Creative ways of cutting costs in your online business.

The online services we have talked about thus far can all be used to maintain more than one site at no additional cost.  So if you smell what I’m steppin’ in here, you’ll realise the first cost saving idea. If you have another site or maybe a friend wants to have a website online, talk to them and tell them you can help them, host there site and provide an online auto responder service. You just cut your costs in half!

Another thing worth bringing up is your lack of knowledge online. You will bridge that lack of online knowledge with information between now and when your business is successful. Here is a tip…. This can seem overwhelming at first but at the end of the day your going to be a webmaster, like it or not. Even if you outsource the web “stuff” you need to know what your talking about to hire and evaluate the online services your getting.

Keeping Costs Down Long Term And Scalable Business Practices.

Online business costs need to be scalable. This means that as you get more traffic, sell more goods or services, or basically become successful, costs must remain close to the same. All of the items we have talked about up to this point are scalable… Provided you use the right online web platform. Your expenses should not increase as online activity increases.  You can negotiate after you’ve been a customer for a while or your service providers may have an online affilliate program that can completely offset your costs all together.

The Inevitability Equation.

The what? The Inevitability equation goes something like this. ” If I keep doing thus and so, it is inevitable that I will become successful” Simple, right?  It comes down to staying in the game long enough to become great. And you will become great if you set yourself up for greatness. Don’t spend your way to a disconnected Internet connection in other words.

Are you an entrepreneur who is looking for another or new business to start?  Are you open to considering a new business model?  Are you involved, engaged in, or curious about the information age?

Entrepreneurs are a special breed of people. Independent, out side of the box, and ready to go to work. I’ve been an entrepreneur since my early twenties and would have a difficult time doing anything else besides owning my own business.

Information Age Business Ideas.

The information age has made possible new business models that reward you, the entrepreneur. If you currently operate a business that returns less than 30% profitability, your not using an information age business model.

New Business Ideas Provide Options.

I operate a home business from my home office. As I go along more possibilities for new income streams present themselves. For instance, I have a couple websites or blogs online. Over time those websites have gained popularity and more specifically pages in those websites have gained popularity. So one thing I’ve done is look at some of those pages that get a good share of traffic and I look for ways to monetize the page. Is there a product relates to the content? When I find an affiliate product, I add it to the page. Usually it is just a link. Affiliate products have low payout, usually between 30 and 150 dollars but, here’s the thing, it takes five minutes to add the link…. then I just forget about it.

Now some people after reading the last paragraph will say, that sound stupid. I know I did when I first started a new business online. The cool thing is, when it made sense, after I had niche traffic naturally, I did it and get paid.

A No Experience Business to Start.

A common way to start a home businesswith absolutely no experience, no website, or ideas, is a turnkey home business. Here’s the catch though, a turnkey home business is not a guaranteed money machine, in fact there are no guaranteed money machines. If your a successful person or currently an entrepreneur you can have success with a turnkey home business. The upside to a home business is the profit margins. The turnkey home business I operate work with $1,000; $5,000, and $8,000 dollars and there are several residual elements.

While, in my opinion, it would be difficult to earn a six figure income, with that example, It is much more realistic and happen much more regularly with the right turnkey business.

Non Web-based Business.

I have talked mostly about webbased business ideas primarily because this is a website on the Internet. If I were speaking to a group of entrepreneurs I would add several other ideas. Consulting for one, is a lucrative business model if you have specialized knowledge in a field that you love.  A good consultant can command a mid six figure income and that’s a pretty good income. Earning 500k as an employee, or executive is tough, and the opportunities to do it via that route are scarce. Another point worth considering is how difficult it can be to replace a 500k income that is earned through a job. The average job span in America is 3.4 years.
