Over the last several years I’ve created a successful home business and CreateLiberty.Com has been a solid contributing factor in that success.  Most successful small businesses have a few key elements that make them spin and for my home based business one of the best business ideas I’ve implemented was starting this site.

To be quite frank, I had absolutely no clue what I was going when I started the site.  I was primarily looking at green business ideas at the time and was hoping to find a few home based business ideas that were also in the green, Eco friendly, or sustainable “niche”…. I couldn’t find anything suitable at the time but I did get an up close look at all the successful businesses and business opportunities online and Man were they a ton of home business ideas online, probably more today.

People are finding that the Internet makes it possible to take small business ideas that were once accompanied by several hundred thousand dollars in start up capital, scale them down and create a successful home based business at a fraction of the cost.  I’d say this is the top reason starting a work at home based business makes sense, and the same one that has so many people becoming home based entrepreneurs.

Another thing I see more and more is people taking their own small business ideasand using the Internet to start the business.  In some cases they don’t even have a traditional store front. I’d say the most popular use online entrepreneurs are taking advantage of on the Internet is lead generation.

Are Home Based Businesses Green?

In many ways a home based business is one of the top unnoticed green business ideas.  It is absolutely amazing at the lack of waste I’ve experience with my more green home based business compared to a traditional business I ran for over 8 years.  Think about this:

• I don’t buy gas because I work at home.
• I don’t use hardly any paper at all…everything is digital.
• I have more time and eat better, supporting green food practices.
• I have no material needs for what I produce.
• I don’t have a lease and haven’t need to purchase a separate building.

Another reason it just makes sense to start a home based business is because its smart to have a plan B and most folks just don’t.  In some areas the economy has really put a strain on people having a plan B and another source of steady income is one of the best ideas to think about starting your own home business.  As I mentioned, home based business ideas are everywhere and they just keep getting more relevant everyday.  What happens if you start a turnkey type home business and something happens?  Let’s say the company fails or they don’t innovate and offer new products or services and over time the opportunity isn’t as good?  Well you find a new business to promote.  One of the things I help people with is learning how to “own” their marketing machine so they have a secure business that flexible.  I highly recommend anyone who starts a home business opportunity also start a website or blog. The best new business ideas all talk about providing everything you need to get your business up and rolling.  They talk about simple business systems that save time and allow any experience level to get their business started fast and earning money quickly, and they do, BUT…. If you don’t own your own marketing system your at the whim of the buisness opportunity your affiliated with and I don’t recommend it.  This one idea (by chance) saved me from a bad experience in the home business world a few years back.  The small network of sites I started back in 2007 are a profitable home business model themselves and I’m grateful I have them.  So again, start your own website or blog.  There is a ton of great information for free online about starting a blog or website.  You don’t have an excuse.  You can use the systems and tool provided they might be great, just be working at your own website too and brand yourself!  There is a ton of information on the subject on the Internet, look for personal branding methods on google.

This post is an informative invitation to those scouring the Internet looking for the best home businesses to start their own small business online. I’ll talk more about one of the most successful home business models and online business opportunity I’ve found, and I’ve been seeking (spying) out the best home based business ideas for quite a while, in hopes of finding a good fit to offer here at CreateLiberty.Com…. 

A bitter sweet experience with a turnkey business opportunity in the personal development industry a couple years ago started what has become a very successful network of home business and small business websites. I’ve always loved business and truly thought I found a successful home business I could use to create an on the go income…I just wanted to be able to work from where I was and I didn’t want employees again…..That isn’t asking to much, right?…Well it didn’t work out, not for me anyway…. So what happened? 

Well, long story short, it was my first go around with this type of business (direct sales business model with a “2 up compensation plan”) and I wasn’t prepared for what success required, nor was that ever clearly defined. I felt like I was spinning my wheels. 

I’ve always been good at what I really set my mind to….Always. 

I think most people are, know what I mean? 

Think about the things you have really excelled in. Wouldn’t you agree that the things that captivated your full attention and ambition turned out to be successful? 

So why didn’t I achieve the success I wanted? 

Primarily the two contributing factors that were obstacles to my success were, I did not understand lead generation, and the compensation plan…Here is what I mean. 

I bought a website that was supposed to be “proven” to work great for connecting with intelligent individuals who were looking to create a significant income working part time hours from a home office. The website was CRAP, primarily for one reason: It would never attract natural search traffic (the free kind) which is how you got here today. 

The compensation plan was what it was. Being my first experience doing business on the Internet and my first “business opportunity” I didn’t want to lay out a bunch of capital right off the bat, which is understandable, so what did that mean? 

I generated over 23k US dollars in the first month and NEVER saw a PENNY! Ouch!! Still stings a little bit, mainly because I here a little voice saying “I told you so”, which was from a “well meaning adviser”….. 

So at this point I felt trapped, here is why… 

I felt like in order to be successful I’d basically have to lead people, people just like YOU, along a path that would leave them feeling the same way I did that day… or week. NOT FOR ME! 

I want to feel good about what I do. I work hard and invest time into what I really care about and since I’m an entrepreneur that usually includes my businesses. I didn’t feel good about the prospect of leading other along a path that I felt was a dead end and that is where I found myself. 

Here is what I’ve learned since: 

Most successful home based business owners do a few common things and believe me I’ve studied a long list that would likely fill this page. The “common” things or successful strategies to starting a building a lucrative and successful home business that delivers both free time and lots of cash (net profit) ALWAYS: 

• Follow a System
• Own their Marketing Machine 

Home based business ideas, good ones, come and go. Five years from now the best online businesses will be different from the ones to day, know what I mean? Here is the thing…. If you own your marketing machine, it won’t matter ( I can help you with this). Remember that business I mentioned earlier, well it bombed….If I had been building a marketing machine specific to that business I would have bombed too, but I didn’t and thank God for that. In fact, instead of “bombing” I went on to build a successful network of small business websites that generate a passive income month after month around the clock regardless of where I go, what I do, who I’m spending time with or what other business ventures I’m working, how about that! 

Oh… another thing that most successful online business entrepreneurs do is: They look at their home business like a real business and plan accordingly. Looking back I was thinking only short term and not approaching the opportunity that the Internet (or the business opportunity) really offered. The short term is important and I wouldn’t recommend starting a home based business that wasn’t geared to be profitable within the first 30 days or so because I know how power profitability is, more from a mental standpoint than anything. 

How to Create a Successful Home Business

If your still here and engaged in what your reading, I bet you have a real good reason why success is important. I mean what does earning and extra 5 to 10 thousand dollars working less than 20 hours a week do to your life? We all have our own reasons, but here is the thing, if success is so important to you then why not go ahead and create a situation where you success is inevitable? I’ve actually done this, and it isn’t that difficult. 

Is creating inevitable success really possible? 

Success isn’t mysterious anymore, not today, not in 2010. If success is anything, it is a science, hell there is a book with the name “The Science of Success”….. 

Everyone, including you, has what I call an Inevitability Equation that pertains to success, it goes something like: 

If I do this then I can only experience success. 

When it comes to having raving success in your own cash generating home based business it is all about defining what it is you have to do. Most people won’t flat out share what they do, for what ever reason it just doesn’t happen a whole lot… 

…But, what if a business model, or the compensation plan is structured so this happens freely and is even and element of elite results? You bet… you’ll get the goods! 

The task becomes clearly defining the “this” in the equation. At the end of the day “this” will include: (this is big) 

• Daily Time Commitment
• Participating in Correct Training
• Developing a workable budget
• Developing a Daily Method of Operations
• Staying disciplined with DMO and budget plan
• Understanding and engaging in Income Producing Activities
• Developing Leadership Skills/ Helping Others 

Basically what this list means is that you have a certain amount of time you can devote to your business without totally disrupting the balance in your life. You come in with certain skill sets and you may need to pick up a few new ones, training will allow that to happen quickly. You have a budget now an apparently it works to one extent or another. You need to make room in your budget for you business expenses, lucky for you cost of operating a profitable home business are peanuts compared with ANY type of a traditional business. There will be certain things you will do everyday, or at least the days you set to work on your business. This “daily method of operations” will be your road map to success and it takes the guess work out of “What can I do today to help my business grow”. 

So now you’re honoring your time commitment made to the business and engaging in the training you need for success. You’ve developed your budget and know what to do each day. The next thing to really get good at is staying focused and disciplined with your DMO and operating within your budget. You will understand which activities produce income and you will be engaging in them more and looking for ways to increase the time spent on income producing activity. 

Leadership is really more “Doing” than anything. In the home business world results are the badge of leadership. If you work at the ideas already mentioned you’ll be getting results and begin helping others. 

I like helping other succeed and this is on of the key elements I look for in a good home business opportunity. The best home based business ideas will have a compensation component that rewards those who are willing to help others actually achieve results and the top incomes (multiple six figures) are exclusively reserved for those who are successful at helping others. 

The only way to fail at this point is to Quit. Now that is power, talk about being in the driver’s seat of your financial future! 

Often times people fail or quit an otherwise profitable and successful home based business opportunity because the try too hard. They try to achieve their goals in 30 days when they have goals that require more like 18 months to legitimately realize… There is a good chance they overlooked the budget part of the equation too. Throwing money at the wall, wasting cash on crappy marketing, never made anyone a success in the world of home business; it won’t work for you either. Trust me I learned the hard way! 

Really think about the life you would like to create. Think about the big goal…. If you have a compelling enough goal, one you really, really want to achieve, then you will realize the value and give it the time frame it deserves. Trust me your worth it and so is your goal.

I just put up a new page called “Starting Your Own Business is a Big Deal” you can grab a cup of coffee and read the 2,162 word article I just posted on the starting your own business page here on this site.

This isn’t a left brained guide to starting your own home business or anything of the sort. It is a compilation of the things I’ve learned about starting businesses over the last 15 years or so. It might not be what you think, but I tell you what, it’s worth a read.

Starting businesses is something I enjoy and am able to do it at record speed by exclusively starting home based businesses.  I’m not talking turnkey home business opportunities although some of these are the most successful small businesses you will come across on the Internet today. I’m talking about simple businesses from simple online business opportunities to consulting and back to making money from home with websites.

The Best Business Ideas

The best business ideas are the ones that work.  A few years back I started focusing my efforts exclusively on business ideas that allowed me to work from home and not have employees. I do some outsourcing from time to time. I do get help, but I don’t have the financial burden that employees bring and I also enjoy more time freedom by starting only home businesses.

I spend a considerable amount of time evaluating online small business ideas and find that the best business opportunities are the ones that incorporate the real world and the Internet. If you have a business concept that does this and your excited about it, it might be the best small business idea to start.

The home business model is an amazing tool, combined with the Internet, that enables you test, and even start your business for a mere fraction of the cost associated with a brick and mortar traditional business.  That’s why I love the home business model and focus on only those businesses I can run myself and do it from home, or at least 80% from home.

$1,500 bucks for an office lease is not bad, it is definately a justifiable expense.  On the other hand I can justify what I could do with the $18,000 per year I’d save by making the same business spin from a home office.

In this post I will show show how starting your own business can be broken down into simple process, a step by step home business start up guide of sorts. Will it work for every business? Probably not, but if your starting your own business with your own idea, it will will be useful especially if your starting your very first home business.

It would be great to write an article that shows exactly how to start a home business, but one size does not…. fit all.

The first step along the way of starting your own business is to do some pre planning. I’ve spent some time researching resources on starting a business and the SBA or Small Business Administration has improved their small business offerings immensely for 2010. If you have found these business resources to be lacking, like I did, you may be surprised to find improvements they have made to their websites.

Besides the SBA there are many other great start your own business guides online. I’m not getting into these resources to much as It seems I just did that a couple months ago. One thing worth pointing though is the page they have on avoiding loosing a bunch of cash and feeling like a tool.

Here is a Government Website that offers some information on Home Business Scams, It’s worth a read especially if your looking into home business opportunities that offer an in place system, these are sometimes referred to as a “buisiness in a box”.

I’d suggest doing your due diligence when it comes to these types of businesses, but I’d never say stay away from these because I know they work. That said, we want to look at starting your own business with your own idea. These are the fun ones, but they can be scary to actually get started too, I’ve been through this more than once.

Seems entrepreneurs are idea people and every entrepreneur probably has a thousand business ideas for every one they started. This is what can be scary about investing the time and money into starting your own home business….Will it work?  How long will it be before I’m earning a profit from the venture?  The questions keep coming, don’t they?

Here are a list of questions to ask before you start your business, these can be approached as a checklist of simple steps to take to start your business. So here we go:

Is there a significant demand for your product or service?

Do people want what you got?  Are they going to pay you for it?  Talking to friends and family about your own idea is one way to get feedback, but it probably isn’t the best feedback on whether you should move forward with you start up.  This phase is called market research by some.  I like to look at it as a time to gather resources, and really look at what we are about to do.  I have found myself that this is a part of the start up process where you business concept can really take shape.  Try not to be to attached to the original business idea as most businesses that are started look a lot different than when they were first conceived….Trust me.

This is also the time to access competition as competition can greatly affect whether you start up is really all that attractive.  Don’t run because there is competition, because you want a healthy competitive market because its the best sign that a customer base is there and eager to buy.  I’d look for ways to you can start a business that improves the current offerings or makes them easier to buy or use.  This is the angle many niche businesses use to start up these days.

Is your business concept or idea feasible? 

In other words if you could determine that the market called for what you want offer and you could be profitable, could you pull it off?  This usually comes down to having the skills, man power, and capital to make it happen. Answering no to this question isn’t the end of the road, it just means you have to take a look at gathering more resources or maybe take on a partner to help with the start up expenses.  Not suggesting it, just a thought. It is always better to know before you actually get your business up and running.

What is your plan to launch your business?

Starting your own business should be exciting and if you can make it that way, not only for yourself but others, you will likely have a successful launch.  I find the best time to create cross marketing opportunities is before you open the doors.  Another point is start up capital and cash flow, this can be difficult and this is the phase that might turn up some agreements that can improve cash flow, and even capital.

But, what about the actual plan?

Oh, yeah. Given this is is a home business your starting on your own terms, you can dictate how the launch will work, but get some counsel.  First thing I’d recommend is using a website or blog, and you can learn all about how to do that in short order if you have a business that is burning to started.  There are countless free resources on building a powerful website. Step By Step Home Business Start Up Guide

I do some stuff online that is step by step, some of my income generating activity that is.  Here is the thing though, while I can break it up into step by step, it really is much more intuitive than a list.  Not to mention over 90% of being successful in business is about habits, character, determination, and will than it is about having the right plan, step by step or not.  You likely already know this too, if your still with me.

Any, maybe every business, comes down to doing something. So much noise…. Be the guy or gal who does something.  While everyone sit’s around talking about starting their own business, you be the one starting yours. Do something everyday to make your business better.  At first this might only be on paper, it may happen through conversation, doesn’t matter just do something. 

Over time I realize I can only think about doing something for so long before I end up talking about it.  I’ve also learned I can only talk about doing something for so long before I end up doing something about it.  At the end of the day starting a business is about the doing, but until then keep it forever in your thoughts, and conversation.

A key component to starting your own business and building a successful home business is surrounding yourself with people who make you want to your best.  This is key, I could list about 500 quotes about this one idea, you’ve already heard most of them so I won’t.  Maybe you don’t have a great community of entrepreneurs for friends, so what, use the Internet. 2010 is an exciting time, things are different aren’t they?  Starting your own home  business online is one of the best businesses to start in 2010, bar none.  I feel odd saying that given more than one of the income streams in my business didn’t even exist 6 or 7 years ago.  People joke about the business concepts that don’t seem to make sense today, I see this a lot with twitter. Do I use twitter?  You bet I do.  Do I completely understand it and feel twitter is overwhelmingly productive and useful, nope.  Do I think by this time next year it will play a big part in my success, and income statement, I sure the hell do!  That’s why I do it.  I didn’t understand 100% of what I do right now at some point in the past, and not to far in the past I might add.

What is a good business I can start from home?

If your a person who is stuck in this question, I can totally relate.  I owned a commercial construction firm for 8 years or so.  I reached a yearly revenue of over 2.8 million dollars, had 30 plus employees and through a moment of clarity realised I was one of the most miserable people I knew. I couldn’t sleep sometimes for 3 nights in a row and was developing a nervous twitch in my face.  I knew it had to stop and not long later I asked myself this same probing question…” what is a good business to start “. Part of me just wanted to go and hide, so I did in a way.  I spent around 8 months on an Island in Lake Michigan figuring out what I wanted to do moving forward.

What I did, the approach I took, was to define what I wanted my life to look like if it could be exactly as I wanted it.   This was tough to do, but in brief I came up with something like this:

That’s simple enough right?  Well here I am…..

I like what I do, I enjoy writing to this site and developing new and creative ways to start businesses an earn money on the Internet.  Its fun, I enjoy great latitude to do as I please with my time and money.  I’ve also, since this moment of clarity, taken great steps to simplify my life.  This was painful at first but it is absolutely necessary if you want to experience financial freedom as quickly as possible which was my approach.

I’d like to hear from you in the comments. How do you relate to the things I’ve mentioned in this post?  Are you pissed off about not finding a clean list of steps and such?  I know what you mean.  I remember feeling like, “If I just knew WHAT to do, I could do ANYTHING!”, ever feel that way?

Many of the millions of Americans operating full or part time home businesses think the best home based business insurance in 2010 might be none.  Home business insurance is at best an wool blanket of double coverage and at worst a complete waste of money depending on the business entity, your daily business practice and the amount and value of equipment you may insure.

When I checked with my business insurance agent he mentioned the items I was concerned with insuring for my home business:  like my computer, lap top, printer and various software were already covered under my home owners insurance coverage.

So is home business insurance really necessary for you business in 2010?  It’s a great question and I’m always reluctant to give straight away advice on matters so circumstantially dependant.  For instance, if you business is primarily operated from you home office but you have clients or customers who actually come there, to the premiss’s, it might be smart to get a home business insurance policy.

Many people opt for a home business liabilitypolicy, if you already have home owners insurance, you probably already have an acceptable home business liability policy as well.  Its always best to check with a qualified insurance agent when dealing with protecting your home business assets, and a qualified expert, I’m not.

It is likely its not necessary you have a home business insurance policy in place, I don’t.  Of course my business is simple, I don’t have walk-in clients, customers, or the general public entering my home or home office for any reason.  As far as my computer, it doesn’t have a lot of value and I back up the stuff that does have value.

Home Business Insurance 2010

2010 is upon us and my have things changed. I think more about insuringmy time and work space than I do the stuff I own or use.  One method I employ in by operations which could be considered home buisness insurance is to keep my tools and data systems web based. I do this mostly because it insures me that no matter where I go, I can access my information, my email lists, my customers, my websites, my accounts, etc.  I really like this, it lets me work pretty much where ever I’m at at the time. Regardless of the home based business idea having a web based office will pay divedins.

I’ve own a few companies and help dozens of insurance policies and I’d say dealing with local insurance agent for your home business is the best advice I can give.  Having a local agent is key to getting the value and piece of mind that you paid for when you decided to get your business insurance policy.

If you are an entrepreneur you probably get simple home business ideas flying around in your head all day long and if there aren’t a bunch of new business ideas floating around up there, you probably see ways to improve your business or lifestyle wherever you look.

Bright Ideas, Bright Business Ideas.

If your anything like me, your experience of going to a coffee shop or visiting a local merchant, is more like an evaluation or an adventure than it is a task. I see smart, and dumb, small business ideas everywhere I go. I’ve also learned to predict, with some accuracy, about how long a business might be around.

I gotta say this too, I really appreciate a good small business. I have a deep respect for any entrepreneur but especially one who has intentionally created an experience for a customer that comes back again and again.

I like simple business ideas.  I think they are the best ones.

It seems entrepreneurs are idea people. I love business ideas or any idea that creates the situation of money being exchanged. I find it fascinating, the idea of trade, the agreement.

Money really has no value outside the agreement two people make. Whether its smart marketing or a candid conversation, someone decides to buy, they agree on value and offer their hard earned money.

Over the years I’ve had a number or employees, friends, and family who all have, in one way or another, offered their opinion on being in business for themselves. A common theme I’ve heard is: “I don’t have enough Money to start that business”…..

I have another view. Our experience helps create our opinions and our opinions help create our experience. Opinions have power if you give it to them.

I started a concrete business in my early twenties with no money, really none. ( of my own ) I got a couple hundred bucks from a guy who wanted a floor in his garage, bought the few tools I had to have and was on my way. Five or six years later, we had 30 plus employees and did over 2 million in sales. Sooo… when I hear, “I don’t have the money to start this business I’d really like to start”, it sounds uninformed, know what I mean?

A service oriented buisness is a good business to start for the new entrepreneur.  Many are inexpensive as far as start up capital is concerned and everyone can offer one service or another.  Most service businesses like construction, home improvement, yard maintenance, window washing, cleaning…etc. can all be started for under 500 dollars. Home based business doesn’t require the start up capital that most traditional small businesses do.

Consulting is a simple home based business that can be started with little capital. Most professionals already have a home office and the equipment to get a home based business started. Small business consulting, interior design consulting, continued education consulting, tax consulting, home health care consulting, the list goes on. Do you have expert knowledge that people would pay for? Then sell it. Let people know what you can offer, ask them if they would like to buy it. Be creative.

Home Based Business Ideas

Successful home based business ideas are always connected to something and someones. It is smart to start a home based business that is serving an existing market. Creativity is tricky, too much and its a flop in business, don’t reinvent the wheel, try making it better.

Marketing a home based business is an area of expense, and a big expense if you not careful. Marketing can really get out of hand. I suggest a marketing system that utilizes third party influence. I mean your customers. Come up with a smart way to get your customers to do what you want them to do which is to keep buying the products or services your small business offers and get other people to do the same. This tip, while not specific, is what makes a home based small business successful. Always do that, and after you’ve done it, do it more.

I like blogging as a home business. I enjoy writing about small business and personal development. So I have a few websites that earn money. Using the Internet to make money from home is a great business opportunity. I think its overlooked and under explored. Most people look at me funny when I tell them I author a couple small business websites. They ask if I’m a writer, I say….”not really”, cause I’m not, I don’t think?

I write mostly about home business ideas on this small business blog and this title came to mind earlier.  Home based business ideas that work for average people multiply daily, you may already know this if you been researching business ideas online.

So whats average anyway?

Well, I’d say average people have a job they dedicate a good amount of time to.  They have a decent place to live and reliable car to drive.  Statistics say the average person in the U.S. earns around 36k and works around 50.3 hours per week.

I guess another name for this post could have been home business ideas for people who have a real job or business ideas for employees or business ideas for people looking to earn 10k to 20k more per year without sacrificing every waking hour.

Here’s the deal, or proposition, if you will.  Why don’t you start a blog that integrates what you do for a living, what you would like to do for a living and what your doing to get there.  Another good point: GOOD POINT: If you were a blogger and did the work to gain credibility and a following on your blog don’t you think it might open some doors the next time you were looking for a job?  Think maybe you would even get offers? Probably…

I’m not saying that blogging in and of itself is a great home based business idea or a profitable one, though it could be, I’m saying its a start.  I love the idea of momentum when it comes to business and creating a successful business idea.  Just doing anything leads to something and sometimes something leads to significance. You agree?

Successful home businesses are not all that complicated and depending on your income goals a blog might be a great way to get started.  If your not into committing to a full fledged business, try committing to a small business blog about your area of expertise.

Another great area I write about from time to time is personal development.  Actually personal development was the key to me starting this blog.  I get thousands of visitors every month to this little small business blog and I just basically write my ideas about small business and success.

I earn money with my blog a couple different ways out or dozens of ways to earn money online.  I do some advertising sales, lead generation, and a couple other little things, oh and some affiliate product sales. 

For instance, right now I’m working on connecting with someone or a company that is interested in generating leads online.   I’ll find someone who is serious about generating leads for a business opportunity, a small business product or something of that sort and offer a marketing opportunity to them. Not sure what that will earn but I think adding contact forms to a few of my sites and generating a hundred or so leads a month is worth a nice little chunk of change. Its a rewarding home based business idea.

Average people are earning money online doing dozens of things from selling stuff on eBay to starting SEO consulting companies.  Web design is a great home business ideas you could start locally and expand later using the Internet.

Successful small business ideas are a vehicle, driven by a success minded person.  I really think success minded people become successful people. Its and intentional thing…. I think…

I think it can happen almost on accident if you have a genuine passion for the business your in, but sometimes its gonna take the will to persist and be consist and through slow or difficult times.  I think  a good business idea is the one that gets you excited and keeps you up at night.

Smart business ideas are all around us I think and they are often connected already to the live we are living.  I think people sometimes overlook the most obvious choices for a good small business start up.  I see a lot of “me too” businesses and entrepreneurs looking to tap into an existing market by competing on price alone.  Commoditization of just about every service and product driven business is possible and this mindset only ensures its early arrive.

People are different and so are the businesses they start. I’ll talk about the top three traits of successful small business opportunities and the top 3 traits of the small business entrepreneurs pursuing them.

Lets start with the businesses.

Probably numbering in the Millions, home based business ideas and small business opportunities, offer “turnkey” ways to be in business quickly and with some sort of a business plan. I’m not talking about the other millions of great business ideas people have of their own, I’m talking about business opportunities operated much like a franchise, but without the fees.

Home Based Business Ideas.

Most home based business ideas are of an affiliate nature.  Drop shipping and the EBay boom helped, greatly, to facilitate the home based business boom on the Internet.  People learned they could sell products via EBay and have them dropped shipped from a third party and never even see the product or the customer.  Many work at home business ventures operate in much the same way.  Ultimately you play the role of marketing in the business models and doing so can earn a pretty healthy income over time.

Not only are these businesses set up for operating from a home office, many can really be run from anywhere, thanks to technology.  Once a marketing platform is built the need to sit  at a computer, in many cases, is gone.  Being able to work from anywhere is very appealing, especially to a younger group of entrepreneurs than we’ve seen entering the small business field.

Small Business Ideas.

There are also many small business entrepreneurs operating exclusively online.  Operating a small business online is much like a traditional business and commonly these businesses fall in the service category.  Online small business provide things like web design, search engine optimization, hosting, marketing systems, and other various teaching and consulting.  In my experience these “tech-traditional” small businesses have more contact with the customer and are not merely product based.

Both business examples are viable ways to make money using the Interenet and a home office. So what should you look for in evaluating a home based business or small business concept?

Top three traits of solid online commerce:

1. Must be scalable.
2. Must have potential for innovation.
3. Must serve a relevant need that expands.

Of all the business start up models I’ve seen online and of all the successful small business entrepreneurs that I’ve studied, these three themes come up constantly.

What does it mean for a business to be scalable?

Simply put the idea you use to start a business needs to work with five customers just like it works with 5 thousand customers.  When I say works that means the business model needs to be profitable as it grows or contracts… Because it will.

Why is innovation so important?

The information age is quick.  People may want something today that they won’t even look at tomorrow.  Staying in close contact with customers will allow you to stay up to speed with the problems they face.  Innovation aimed at the solving of your customers products will prove to be a big factor in small business success.

An finally serving a relevant need that expands is the last component that successful home based businesses and small online businesses should have.  This ties into the need for innovation and the idea that the customer should steer that innovation.  Many times your initial offering can create a “back end” product that makes sense and sells… This is the point in choosing a small business model that allows one product to facilitate a need for another.

To finish here, I’d like to talk about the entrepreneurs themselves, what common threads exist in success, and what you might consider before starting your own small business.

Successful Entrepreneurs.

1. Are persistent.
2. Are patient.
3. Listen to the market and the customer.
4. Are radically open to innovation.
5. Avoid completely reinventing the wheel.

These are five traits of successful entrepreneurs online. I might add that a very important activity they engage in is collaboration.  The online community is quite open and they work together and share information that benefits everyone.  Networking is crucial to building a successful home business or a small business using the Internet today.
